Generator Is it worth it???
« on: January 22, 2012, 12:11:02 PM »
I've thought about it casually is it worth it to install a generator onboard. i have plenty of room for it below deck and can easily pipe the exhaust out and heat shield it ect. but is it actually worth it i do stay out long days and often fish at night idk!!!  ??? ??? 5hrug 5hrug is it worth the extra weight and effort.

I was thinking the same thing with a small Honda to power everything when I am away from the dock.  It is cheaper for sure.

I was thinking about the same thing to have when I got out on the rare late night trip or when I need to power other accessories. Harbor Frieght has a practically disposable 800w generator for $129! http://www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engine-generators.html

I don't think you can wrong with it. Maybe cover it with a center console cover when traveling and not in use?

My buddy had one of those HF gennys and it was LOUD and it gave off lots of emissions. I guess ya can't go wrong for the money. I happen to have a Honda EU 2000 and love it. Quiet and super fuel efficient ;D, and low emissions. Wise Sales is the best and cheapest place to buy one.
A New Marine Genny will run you approx. 5-6K or more and that would be a Kohler, plus all the hardware, hoses, wiring, thru-hull, muffler, etc. You'll need to install a control panel in the cabin. A pretty big job. The main reason most people want the genny is to run the A/C while away from the dock.

I think most of them you can put an aftermarket muffler on it. I guess it really depends on cost vs benefit.

I wouldn't be running anything like a AC.. For me, having the outlets working and the Microwave would be  cool.  The outlets for the blender, electric cooking pan and an electric heater in the winter.

overnights on the water is cool.  You wake up, and your ready to fish without all the work in the morning.  Since I am dock side and not in the slip, I don't want to make the run from Toms river to the inlet in the dark.  If I wait for daylight to leave, then I lose the first 45 minutes of first light.  I would find a cove near the inlet the night before, sleep in the boat with the comforts of shore power, then ready to go from there in the morning.
