WASHINGTON — The largest solar storm in five years is racing toward Earth at this hour, threatening to unleash a torrent of charged particles that could disrupt power grids, GPS and airplane flights.

The sun erupted Tuesday evening, and the effects should start smacking Earth between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Eastern time Thursday, according to forecasters at the federal government's Space Weather Prediction Center. They say the storm, which started with a massive solar flare, is growing as it speeds outward from the sun.

"It's hitting us right in the nose," said Joe Kunches, a scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He called it the sun's version of "Super Tuesday."

Scientists say the sun has been relatively quiet for some time. And this storm, while strong, may seem fiercer because Earth has been lulled by several years of weak solar activity.

"This is a good-size event, but not the extreme type," said Bill Murtagh, program coordinator for the space weather center.

The solar storm is likely to last through Friday morning, but the region that erupted can still send more blasts our way, Kunches said. He said another set of active sunspots is ready to aim at Earth right after this.

But for now, scientists are waiting to see what happens Thursday when the charged particles hit Earth at 4 million mph.

Coppertone time? smk. How serious are the effects of this?  Hope it does not ruin the fishing season.

The whole 12-21-12 thing is about some galactic alignment, not solar flares.

Yeah, except the Mayans never accounted for leap years, which actually added I believe 512 days to the calendar since the Mayans.  So if their "prophets were true the end of the world should have happened by now.  I didn't lose power but I noticed that I can light up a light bulb in my mouth like Uncle Fester  ;D

One cool thing that we might get out of this flare sequence is the opportunity to see the Northern Lights tonight.

I thought I heard there was a possibility of seeing them last night.  Would be hard with the full moon.

Not necessarily.  The moon although bright will be going east to west where as the Northern lights are well you can guess where, will be bright as well.  Mostly in shades of green.  This activity will last till Friday so it is possible to see.  Unlike a meteor shower where it lasts for a split second and the brighter the moon lights the atmosphere the atmosphere will be ignited by the charged ions to the extent that will make them glow brightly.

We'll see if it stays clear enough tonight to see the northern sky.

Yeah, I checked continuity by putting the positive and negative feeds in my mouth.  I'm trying out that new technology of turning my eyeballs into spreader lights  rofla
