Struck out today
« on: March 22, 2012, 07:01:49 PM »
Spent pretty much all day on the water.  Lots of fog until about noon, stayed in close all day though.  Tons of boats but no one pulling anything over the rails.  Bunker are thick out there, snagged a few for bait.  I do have a funny story.

When it was time to head in for the day after multiple moves I turned the key and nothing.  Didn't even try to turn over.  This happened when I tried to start it at home because I had the helm apart so much that the plug from the harness to the starter pulled apart.  So, of course I check the kill switch first and thst's a no go.  I break out the toolbox, start pulling off the console while at anchor, mumbling a few choice words under my breath trying to disconnect and reconnect the plug with no success.  The Admiral finally says "should the boat be in gear when you start it?"  I snap back "of course it shouldn't be in gear, relax I'll figure it out rabble rabble mumble mumble" under my breath.  She calmly says "baby, I think the boat is in gear".  So I look up above the console and dash I now have completely apart and sure enough it was in gear.  Put it in neutral and it fired right up.  Funny thing is if it didn't happen when I was testing everything at home, the 2nd thing I would have checked after the kill switch was to see if it was in gear.  But because it happened at home, I immediately went right to undoing the console and checking the harness plug instead of looking at the obvious.  Even when you learn, you still have alot to learn hahaha.

Anyway it was a beautiful day on the water.

The cure for everything is salt water: sweat, tears, and the sea.

thats boating for you...

years ago I couldn't figure out the same thing.. yep, it was the kill switch.. it was connected, but not entirely....

When I first got my grady, it has 2 fuel tanks.  I assumed one would finish and automatically switch to the other tank.  I go out, very rough, boat stalls close to the beach, anchor line catches just in time before i get beached... call sea tow... back in the slip, call mechanic.. comes down, opens up the back panel and manually switches fuel tank... Perfect.. started right up... $300.00 later.. i was like WTF.. your kidding me, right?

Boating.. you live and learn.. make mistakes and try to help others from making the same ones.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.

There use to be a saying " Keep it simple". Heard the term many times when I worked on computers. It applies to anything that needs to be troubleshooted.  slt

Hey, it makes for a good fishing story. Glad it was a simple thing and you can laugh about it.
I've spent most of my life fishing, the rest I've just wasted     <'((((><

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

Thanks for the report.

Glad your mechanical issue was only operator error and nothing serious.
