What bait and place are producing croaker?
« on: August 20, 2007, 08:10:37 PM »
I am down in Cape May for the next five days and I would like to catch some croakers. Fished Sunset Beach on Sunday morning for a few hours 6am - 9am, used clams and strip squid, a few bites , but could not hookup. Any suggestions on baits and areas to try? Jim's bait suggested Light house or Sunset Beach. Any help would to great!!! NJDEVIL  >:D

NJDEVIL, I don't know much about surffishing for Croakers off the beach. I suppose you can be successful. Usually I see the real small Croakers up close to the beach on my charters Fishing from FISH TALE. These fish I will throw back, they are too small to try to get meat from. We have started to  get Croakers over the last few trips but we have been fishing in about 45ft of water off of Ocean City. Some have been on the small side and we have gotten a fair amount of average to large Croakers too. They are a lot of fun to catch. They hit hard and give a good fight for a fish that does not get much bigger than 18" or so. Some people don't care for fishing for them, I think they are great fun and eat good too.

As far as bait that your using. Squid is good that's what I use most of the time. Clam should be OK also. If you would like to try for some bigger Croakers some time get a few guys and give me a call and maybe we can set up a charter trip.

GOOD LUCK!!

NJDEVIL  You might try the inlet jetty at the ferry terminal.  Or the opposite side jetty which I believe can be accessed through the Higbee WMA.

Thanks for all who replied, fished at the Lighthouse today. Got rained on in the morning, only caught two dogfish. Rain stopped fished for two hours in the afternoon. Again only two dogfish, used squid with gulp swimming minnow. Got a local report to try the Alexander Street jetty, I will be there at a little before sunrise. I will report after I get back from the beach with the family.

Well the weather sucks, the kids are going nuts. Fished Alexander Street from 5:45 to 8:00, two more dogfish, I feel like a dog catcher. The weather should improve tomorrow, I hope the fishing does too.
