Wednesday eve Striper report
« on: April 25, 2012, 09:37:00 PM »
Headed to the area just north of the 9 and 10 and dropped out a chartreuse and a menhaden stretch.  Bought myself a line counter and man what a difference.  Took a west to east troll and bam, down goes the menhaden.  After a good long fight I knew I had a nice one.  Got him in the net and had a nice 36" bass on the deck.  He came home to feed me and the neighbors.  Let the lines back out and headed further west and had a run off, but he came unbuttoned.  took a few passes and headed south of the reach and back east and off goes the menhaden again.  After another good fight I had a 34" on deck, he went back to live another day, I had all my meat.  Dropped the lines back out and no sooner than travelling 100 yards off goes the menhaden again.  This time it was a small 27-28" fish.  Got him back quickly in the water.  Kept heading back west and sure enough, menhaden again.  He came unbuttoned boatside but was a nice fish.  Finally got around the 11a and off goes the chartreuse.  Hell of a fight, only to find he was a yellow eyed demon, my first of the season.  Thought of cutting him up to freeze him for fluke strips but he wasn't bleeding and was hooked perfectly, so he got to live for another day.  It was sloppy out there but manageable.

Nice Mike! What line counter did you get?

It's a Rapala clip on, and it's great.  I like it because I can easily switch it off from one pole to the next.  I was finding that 80-90 feet was bottoming out in 25-27 feet of water at 3.5 knots, braided line.  I was letting out 80-85 and then reeling up a couple cranks.  Had the stretch's running perfectly about 5' above bottom for the most part.  It really changed the game for me because I have Quantum reels that I troll with and they don't have a line counter or level wind that I could at least guess with each full pass.

Thanks! We were second guessing ourselves the last trip out when we were fising Red Church. That would've helped for sure.

Is this it?

That's the one.  A little pricy thanks to the useless light but oh well.  Can't speak for the longevity yet obviously, but it functioned well and I tested the accuracy at home and it's dead on.

Thanks Eddie, it was definitely a good night.  The line counter sure took all the guessing out of the equation and kept me dialed in on them.
