Raritan Bay Sat Afternoon Trip 5/9/12 HELP!!! = )
« on: May 09, 2012, 07:11:15 AM »
Morning my fellow fishermen!!! grtn I need everyones 2 cents so please all of your help is apprecaited.  clp As I have mentioned before, I have yet to land me a big boyeeee striper. I am taking my brother out this sat afternoon (weather permitting) for them and well, I am just not sure where to start. ??? I get everything from the clams jigs umbrella rigs trolling to anchoring. I just dont know how to apply it all. Or for that matter where to start on the bay. I thought about hugging the beaches by highlands up around the hook... then I thought about right out of seawarren, the white light house by the sail boats.  :headscra: :headscra: Then I thought why not ask thoes who know what they are doing and have landed a few in their time. rgmn  TT^ That is where you guys come in. All advice and guidance on the best way to have a productive trip would be appreacited. I hate to bring people out and not have them catch anything. I mean fishing is fishing...but still i feel better when they bring home fish. Thanks  guys!!!  slt

I can send you a gps spot for around the hook.  In this spot you want to anchor and chum clams.  If your interested, I can pm you the entire process.  I have been very successful using this method in this spot, and its not far from where you are.

I can attest to this spot.   t^

Got some here Sunday Evening.  Look for bunker on the way out too, and snag a few.  Try livelining them alond the channel edge.
Good Luck

Tides are very important when fishing stripers.   If you don't have good water movement you're not going to catch fish.    Bluefish couldn't care less.  They'll feed all day.  But Bass will turn on and off depending on where the tide is.   Saturday has a dead low at roughly 8 am depending on where you're at in the Raritan.    This is my opinion, but I would expect the bite would be off until about 9:30 when the tide starts coming back in.   Tides change every 6 hrs so from 9:30 till about 12 would be the best.   Once you get towards high tide the water will slack and the bite will turn off again.   Same goes for the outgoing.

Also make sure you know how to snag bunker.  Fresh bait is always better than frozen.

Close, but you have to add about 1 hour of slack tide.  So from dead low until the tide starts moving again at high tide, will be about 7 hours.

Not sure what your definition of big boyeee is, but I have caught 33-38" beautys pretty consistently lately while trolling stretch 25+s along the reach channel edges at dusk. Plus if you find bunker in your travels you can switch tactics.

Watchout because some jackhole will invariably not realize you are trolling and decide to muck with your course or plugs or both. Have fun!!

5hrug Not soo good.... rookie I think is what I would be called :P It was a great trip out...launched out of the highlands, killed me trying to get back in with my brother at the helm, but hey what am I gonna do. We started in by the bug light  got some robins and a few shorts and one baby skate.  >:( Aside from that ziltch on the stripers. We anchored off the false hook ( i think that is what everyone calls it ) and fished for bout a hr with clams and I did start a chum slick but no action. Thats ok though...i will still be out there tying. So far this season snagged 40 bunkers,( love crabbing too) three keepers ( have 4 pieces left that we are eating tonight) few shorts, and starting a killer tan off with sunburned shoulders and back!  rofla rofla
