Staten island surf report 6/23
« on: June 23, 2012, 07:48:00 PM »
Was fishing with my dad from Staten Island's(Raritan Bay) surf for fluke. In an hour and 15 minutes I caught just one fluke but at a nice 20 inches. My dad caught a 20 incher practically identical to mine and a 22 incher. We caught more keepers today then we did yesterday on a 3/4th party boat in Jersey. All fish were caught on killies. Unlike the prevouis few times they only bit when reeling them in, not deadsticking. First time since 09 my dad outfished me two trips in a row.

2 20 inchers

22 inch

Unfortunately that pic to me doesn't do the 22 incher justice.

Nice catch .Dead sticking for fluke only works on a drifting boat .

Strong current with the killies work. At our spot mid-tide between low or high there's a good current. I fished at low tide and the water wasn't moving much.

By the inlet I guess, was fishing in the well-known Great Kills area. Wasn't anywhere close to Sandy Hook or Keyport area. Fish were in shallow water.

Several guys were using gulp but they were only catching shorts.. Nobody used killies, the biggest fluke besides ours was 18 about on spearing.
