7/3 - Sharkin
« on: July 03, 2012, 09:45:39 PM »
Made it out of MI this AM with my brother-in-law, Ralph and nephew, Mike. We broke the inlet and were greeted by amazing conditions. Since, I had never fished BFT/shark in any fashion, let alone from my boat we chose to play it conservative and stick 'close', mostly because I am still getting used to the capabilities of the boat.

We headed direct to Little Italy. On the way out we came across bunker pod and after pod and boxed a few in the live well. Made it to the grounds and passed a large sea turtle. With life present we figured we picked a good spot. Temps were higher than anticipated, about 76. We put one of the 2 chum buckets over and began to wait..... We finally saw some life! A 6' blue shark trolling the slick then a run on the short line -> lost! Over the next couple hours we saw about 6 or so sharks, some nosing the baits but, nothing coming tight. They just weren't very comittal (reminded me of a marriage I once had).... We did get one off the stern to attack a 10" rubber shad that Ralph threw his way but, he didnt come tight - that was cool. With nothing coming tight and out of bucket number one, and feeling good about the great conditions and the boat we decided to make the 10 mile or so jog to Monster Ledge. As we pulled out we saw a lumber pilot whale....

At the Ledge, chum and gear out we waited and waited.... Finally, Ralph says "Come on sharks!" as I scrub the boat some, with that the reel next to me begins screaming. I grab it, wait a few seconds and engage the reel. Fish On!! Instantly splashing on top and pulling line I knew it was a mako. It turned towards the boat and bolted, reeling in line fast and barely keeping up it decides to dive and I finally get to fight it for just a few minutes. Knowing it wasn't big there was no need to fire up the motor. Gaff in hand Ralph is prepared to help out. As I get it to the surface we aren't a 100% sure it's legal. We estimated 50" but, not wanting to kill a fish we are unsure of, we keep the shotgun cased and shoot it with the camera only, kiss it on the nose and cut it free to fight again.

One more fondling of the bait without a taker and we were out of bucket number two and home we came.

What a beautiful day to be out and some fun action for the family. Good times by all!  t^

Thanks to everyone who has provided me with any help! Especially Capt Carl, Figaro (Tommy), Capt Rich (MR Charters). You guys are the bomb! I am sure I missed one or two others.

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

Actually fine. Most of its run was towards the boat, lol.
