It is going to be a tough weekend, yet just another typical summer weekend here in NJ.  Between the heat, humidity, scattered showers and thunderstorms and cautious conditions offshore, there are a lot of weather factors take into consideration this weekend.  Heat Advisories, Heat Watches and Heat Warnings will continue through the weekend.  Even along the immediate coast will see heat indices into the 100’s.

A cold front will move through the region late Saturday Night into Sunday morning.  It will eventually push far enough south early next week which will be hopefully bring some much needed relief from the excessive heat.  The Storm Prediction Center has already issued a Slight Risk for Severe Weather for both Saturday and Sunday.  The main threats Saturday will be damaging winds and hail and on Sunday damaging winds.

The SPC has issued a Mesoscale Discussion for Central & Northern NJ, PA, NY & CT (see map).  The chances for strong to severe thunderstorms will increase starting this afternoon.  There is an 80% chance that the SPC will issue a Severe Thunderstorm Watch.  These will be fast moving storms capable of damaging winds!

Re: Update to Severe Weather Threat
« Reply #6 on: July 07, 2012, 02:47:38 PM »
The SPC has updated a couple of areas, inclusing Ocean County and parts of Burlington County in the threat area for severe weather.  It is possible they will add these counties to the Severe Thunderstorm Watch as well.  Due to high temperatures and humidity today as well as a cold front coming through and an eastern/southeastern sea breeze, the threat for strong to severe thunderstorms will persist throughout the weekend.

The SPC has issued another update for this evening for parts of Central & all of Northern NJ.

The biggest threat will be from squall lines of storms moving in from OH & PA this evening.  These storms will be capable of strong, damaging winds.  This storm event could be similar to the damaging wind event from last week.

Dr Greg Forbes of The Weather Channel posted this:

Dr. Greg Forbes @DrGregForbes
A derecho (widespread thunderstorm damaging wind event) could drive from north-central to southeast PA, NJ, MD, DE thie afternoon, evening.

Keep an eye for updates!!

The SPC has issued a new Mesoscale Discussion for all of NJ.  There is now an 80% chance of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch being issued for all of NJ.  Storms will move out of the northwest, moving southeast this afternoon/evening.  Strong to severe storms with gusty winds and small hail are possible at this time.

Re: SPC Lowers Risk of Severe Weather for Sunday July 8th
« Reply #16 on: July 08, 2012, 11:27:53 AM »
The SPC has lowered the Risk for Severe Weather in NJ today from 15% to 5% or less.  The main risks being wind and hail.  The risk area has shifted to the south.  This doesn't mean NJ won't see rain or even a strong or severe thunderstorm today, it just means that our risk is lower due to atmospheric conditions.
