As we move into the last full week of July, we are looking at another typical summer week in NJ.  This week doesn’t look like there will be any significant weather events.  However, there will be a chance just about the entire week of showers and/or thunderstorms.  As of today, the SPC has not issued any Severe Weather Risks, but they only do so about 2 days in advance of any significant weather.  Highest chance of rain will be Monday and Thursday.  Temperatures will be into the upper 80’s, even 90’s in some places with moderate to high humidity with lows in the upper 60’s to low 70’s.

***Water conditions differ greatly this week throughout the various waters and it is best to check specific locations if you are planning on going out.

High Pressure that dominated the area the last several days will move farther offshore Sunday Night into Monday Morning.  This will open the door for a weaker cold from which will move in Monday and dissipate.  A much stronger cold front will cross the region on Tuesday and stall south of our region in the Virginia area.  The will allow a very brief building of high pressure over the area on Tuesday and Wednesday.  A warm front will then approach the region on Thursday and move north by Friday.  By the weekend, we will see another cold front passing through the area.

Re: Threat of Severe Weather Today for Most of NJ
« Reply #3 on: July 23, 2012, 09:47:20 AM »
The SPC has issued a Slight Risk for severe weather today for all of NJ except the coastal areas (see map).  There is a 15% chance of damaging winds and a 5% of damaging hail today from multiellular clusters that will move into the area from the northwest and move southeastward.

The SPC has now included all of NJ in a Slight Risk.  Besides that nothing has changed.  Biggest threat is still to the west and north, but there is a chance these storms will make their way into NJ.

Re: Threat of Severe Weather for Thursday
« Reply #12 on: July 24, 2012, 12:37:23 PM »
The SPC has already issued a Slight Risk of Severe Weather for most of NJ for Thursday into Friday.  From the Ohio Valley through to NJ, there is a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms.  Storms will be mostly multicellular, squall lines with damaging winds.  There is a chance of supercell storms with wind and hail.

This is subject to change.

Re: Some Small Craft Advisory Cancelled
« Reply #14 on: July 25, 2012, 10:39:17 AM »
NWS OKX has cancelled the Small Craft Advisories for Raritan Bay/New York Harbor and immediately outside SH.  NWS PHI has cancelled the Small Craft Advisory from SH to Little Egg Inlet.

Small Craft Advisories are still in effect from Little Egg south to Delaware.

Re: Severe Weather Threat for Thursday UPDATE
« Reply #17 on: July 25, 2012, 02:13:11 PM »
The SPC has increased the risk of Severe Weather for Northern NJ to a Moderate Risk indicating a 30%-45% chance and even a 10% chance of severe weather within 25 miles of any point.  The rest of the state is in a 15% & 30% risk of severe weather.  This is SIGNIFICANT, as the Storm Prediction Center is always conservative.  When they issue a moderate or high risk with thatched areas, it is definitely time to really pay attention and take notice.  The threat is going to be of widespread multicell thunderstorms with supercells embedded within them.  Damaging winds from bowing echos (straight line winds/derechos) are likely tomorrow across the region.  There is even a threat of tornadoes.  All is dependent on where the fronts are tomorrow.

I will keep you updated!  Definitely need to keep an eye to the sky and an ear to the weather tomorrow.
