Philly kid branching out into saltwater...
« on: July 23, 2012, 09:32:04 AM »
Hello forum. Just as the title says, I'm just really trying to learn some more info on saltwater fishing - techniques, rigs, etc and so forth. Been fishing for damn near my whole life, im 28 now, but have always been more into freshwater than saltwater - mainly due to having easier access rivers, creeks, ponds and lakes. So...that's basically my story in a nutshell; just looking to learn as much as possible and from some of the reading I've been doing here lately you all seem very knowledgable. Look forward to hearing from/sharing with you all.

wa start asking away, but try reading first, most of the questions have already been asked and you'll learn things you never thought to ask about while doing it. If you plan on surf fishing, I would start with this...

Don't be afraid to ask questions--If the people on here don't know the answers-they will find them--Or the answers don't exist.

Thanks folks. I do have a surf rod and would like to give it some play, but right now I'm just prepping for a fluke trip out of Cape May at the very beginning of August. It's just gonna be my father and I so rather than pay out the ass for a 2 man charter we just gotta suck it up and go out on a party boat. My parent's are renting a house in Ocean City, NJ and I'm going down to visit from August 2nd to August 6th. Anyone know of any good areas along the OC beach to get the dust off my surf hookup?

have you thought about hopping on an open boat charter that some of the captains (sponsors) here have from time to time?  you will pay a little bit more than a party boat but (IMHO) will have a little better time catching and finding fish and is well worth teh little bit extra coin.  its almost like one on one with the first mate and captain who do this for a living and can pass some knowledge and experience to you.  just a thought.

grtn Glad youve came to the dark side >:D th sweet water is cool but salt is where the big boys play. Read alot of the previous posts the will answer most questions.
Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

Welcome! This is a great site.

I would try a sponsor's open boat if you want a great experience. Most of our sponsors are above Great Egg but, you can access Barnaget, Point Pleasant, Belmar, etc in about an hour from Philly.

Give them a try, they make our site what it is.

I'm definitely looking into a lot of the open boat charters on here, but right now I'm just kinda focusing on my vacation in OC, NJ. My dad's not really into fishing like I am, so it's hard for me to convince him to go in on chartering a boat with me... He did get skunked a while back on an offshore tuna trip though, so I think I'm gonna keep searching around on here and try to put another trip together for him come fall. I'm sure everyone on this site is excellent, but does anyone have suggestions on who to talk to to try and set that up?

And I've been checking the open boat charters section on here but nothing posted for next weekend, say between Aug 2 to Aug 5. We're gonna be taking my uncle out as well and it would be great if I could find 3 open seats... Probably just wishful thinking, but anyone know of such an opportunity in the Southern NJ area for one of those dates?
