Ahhhhh...the sand beneath my feet again
« on: August 17, 2012, 07:17:50 PM »
We made a long overdue trip to the park this morning.  As of today, I'm 6 weeks post op.  Still not supposed to be do anything other then walking  ::).  No lifting, pushing, pulling, blah, blah.
But the wife is still able bodied and we both needed a beach day.  So we got out on the sand around the morning high tide to calm surf.  The plan was to try for fluke and kings.  I set her up with a fluke rig and had her cast out a hi-lo targeting kings for me to watch.
Had a small doggie on the hi-lo and she got one short fluke.  Had a few other bumps, but it was a pretty slow morning.  But the weather was great, there was no skunk and it was great to have the sand between my toes again.  Boy am I hurting now from walking in the soft sand  :-\

And the bonus of the day....we watched a huge pod of "happy" bunker moving south towards us.  Then they got not so happy.  Then all hell broke loose.  There was obviously something beating up on those poor bunker.  Watched for about a half hour as they moved south past us, about 300-400yds out getting tore up the whole time.  Figured it was bluefish till we heard reports from multiple sources it was sharks.  They put on quiet a show  t^

Got home to find this video from the day prior of the same thing in the park...
At about 56sec, it looks like a thresher tail.

Good to have ya back chris!  We stopped on a school of bunker being harrassed in the north pocket on the way in from the ridges and wrecks. Immediately hooked up with a foot long blue. Put a 9/0 circle through his back and sent him back in. Had a run off then nothing. Pulled in 1/3rd of that blue bit off a half inch shy of the hook. Was too tired from running in that chop to try it again.

Definitely felt good to get out on the sand and get some salt air.  But two days later and I'm still hurting.
The blitz on the bunker pod added some excitement.  It got close enough that I clipped a kastmaster on for the wife and told her to start casting towards it.  At that point we thought it was big bluefish.  Boy did we luck out that nothing hit the jig.

Still got another 6 weeks before I can return to work or do anything physical.  Getting back in shape is gonna hurt like hell.  I lost 20lbs, for those that don't know me, I didn't have an extra 20lbs to lose  ::). This fall I'll be fishing at half speed and taking it easy till I get back in shape so I don't hurt anything else.
