Abu 7000 C3...any input???
« on: September 03, 2007, 11:44:16 AM »
Was just handed this reel from a non-fishing relative.  Used, overall in good shape.  Just looking what anyone thinks of them. Durability, drag smoothness, etc.

May match it up to a tog stick this fall.  Thanks.

I have several 6500's.  Abu makes a quality product.  I have been using these for fluke fishing and seabass fishing.  I would absolutely buy again.

The only issue I have had is, you must keep the release button greased or it will release the line and not allow the reel to lock up to retrieve line.  That is general maintenance anyway so should not be a big issue.  Other than that, I like it.

I have several 6500 which have been great.  some are over 20 years old.  Also three 7000's which have also been great.  They have caught everthing from albacore, fluke, tuna, blues Etc.

Yep. I have a red 7000 that was new back in 1980 something. Needs to be serviced now (AND HAVE BEEN PUTTING IT OFF FOR A WHILE), BUT HAS BEEN GREAT OVER PAST 20+ YEARS. cAUGHT A TON F BIG BLUEFISH ON IT. Big deepwater fluke (100' depths), stripers, blackfish, you name it.

First let me say that in the mid-late 90's I wasn't a big fan of any Abu reel as all that I owned all seemed to have the same problem---the side plate screws loosening (even after using loc-tight).

After reading good reviews abouth their Pro Rocket series I picked up the Abu Pro Rocket 7000 2 years ago that I use for live lining bunker and jigging big jigs (over 6 ounces). I upgraded the drag system by installing the Carbomax drag washers.

Absolutely LOVE the reel.

I think Grumpy's (a tackle shop in the Brick area) specializes in cleaning & upgrading Abus. Might be worth it to take it there and have it serviced, lubed and perhaps upgrade the drag system and add a power handle if it doesn't already have one.

I liked this reel so much that I want out (OK, so I got them off Ebay) and picked up the Pro Rocket 5500 & 6500. I upgraded the 5500 but haven't gotten around to doing the 6500 but will before next spring.

after reading the responses I can't wait to get out and get one... a 20-year rell is right in my neighborhood. What are we talking $$$ wise and how does abu compare to the competition?

I have a nice gold 7000 LD brand new with 30lb braid on it I may be looking to get rid of.

Brand new never been used.

It is just a little too heavy for the rod I want to use it on.

Simple solution; Buy a new rod to match the reel (Abu 7000) and then buy a new reel to match the other rod... ;D

also a big fan of abu reels. i've been using the BG line a few years, first the BG7000HSN and last year upgraded to the BG9000. this was my "goto" reel until this season when I upgraded to a penn torgue.

the BG7000HSN

I have this reel matched to a Tsunami 7' MH rod that my son uses as his primary jigging/clamming & chunking set up. Again upgraded the drags. It kicks arse.

I actually want to put a red 7000 on that rod instead of the 7000 LD.

Don't need a heavier rod :)
