The remainder of this week is going to be wet.  With the remnants of Isaac bringing rain Tuesday through Wednesday, parts of NJ and the surrounding area could see between 2-4 inches of rain and even 4+ inches locally.  Temperatures will remain seasonal with highs in the low to mid 80’s with lows in the mid 60’s.  Water conditions are rated good, with cautious and Small Craft Advisories on Wednesday Morning Inshore and Wednesday Morning and Afternoon Midshore to Offshore.  Large period swells with rising seas to 5 feet will be persistent all week and gusty winds to 25 knots could affect the area through most of the week.  Small Craft Advisories are possible during the remainder of this week.

The tropics are relatively quiet again, with Tropical Storm Leslie forecast to move out to sea away from the US.  TS Leslie is still one to watch, as the storm has moved farther west than it was forecast.  There is a new area of interest that has a 10% chance of tropical development.  This should be watched, but does not look like a threat at this time.  Kirk, is a post tropical depression moving off towards Europe.

A frontal boundary across the region will sink south and then stall on Monday.  The boundary will move north later Monday as a warm front.  It will remain over the area during the midweek as weak areas of low pressure move along it.  A cold front from the northwest will move into the area on Thursday Night followed by high pressure for Friday into the weekend.

Re: Rain & Tropics Update
« Reply #1 on: September 03, 2012, 03:27:16 PM »
I just wanted to update the rain/flooding potential this week and the new developments and changes in the tropics

There is a lot of tropical moisture in the atmosphere as remnants of Hurricane Isaac make their way through our area on Tuesday and Wednesday.  The Hydrometeorological Prediction Center (HPC) is forecasting 2.5 – 4 inches of rain and even more locally for the area.  Northern areas of NJ will receive the most rain, while southern areas will see less amounts.  Right now, there are not any Watches, Warnings or Advisories posted by the NWS, but areas to our west and south (Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland) have had Flood Advisories and even Flood Warnings already from thunderstorms moving through those areas.  The Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center (MARFC) has issued a “Significant River Flooding Possible” for NJ on Tuesday and Wednesday.  This outlook is issued for larger rivers.  Smaller rivers and streams will most likely experience some flooding or flash flooding.  Flash flooding could also be an issue for the entire area.  If you are in low lying areas or experience localized flooding and flash flooding from rain storms, make sure you take the proper precautions for Tuesday and Wednesday.  Clearing out storm/sewer drains on your street can also help prevent flooding conditions or large amounts of standing water to back up on the streets.  Over the next several days, make sure you are keeping an eye on the weather and follow any local warnings.  Remember, NEVER drive a vehicle through flooded roadways…”TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN!” “HIDE FROM WIND, RUN FROM WATER!”

Significant River Flood Outlook

Now for the tropics.  There are not any big changes.  Tropical Storm Leslie and now Invest 99L are active in the Atlantic.  Tropical Storm Leslie currently has winds of 60 mph and a central pressure of 998mb.  The NHC is forecasting this storm to become a strong Category 1 Hurricane with 90 mph winds.  Leslie is still forecast to remain out at sea, however the recent track has moved west more and brings the storm closer to the coast.  Leslie will likely impact Bermuda as a hurricane, sometime on Saturday.  This is going to bring longer period swells, building sea heights, gusty winds, dangerous rip currents, high surf, possibly beach erosion and even some minor coastal flooding to the area for the rest of this week, persisting into the weekend and even next week.  Right now, Leslie is not a very large storm, but does have the potential to become a moderate sized storm with a wide core of hurricane and tropical storm force winds extending from the center.

Invest 99L was the area of interest in the Atlantic Ocean that has now been given a 60% chance of tropical development over the next 48 hours.  I believe we will see this become a tropical depression and then a named storm within this 48 hour period.  It is too early to tell where this will go, but likely will remain out at sea.  Of course, just because it does not make landfall doesn’t mean it won’t affect the coast with the same effects Tropical Storm Leslie will cause.

Re: Tropics Update Invest 99L is TD #13
« Reply #5 on: September 03, 2012, 06:56:32 PM »
Already changes in the tropics.  Invest 99L has already been upgraded to Tropical Depression #13 and will likely become Tropical Storm Michael.  The NHC says this storm will only make it to a tropical storm and then weaken.  NHC track also keeps it way out in the eastern Atlantic and will not pose a threat to the US.

There is a wave being modeled to come off of Africa in several days that may affect the East Coast in some form or another.  If it develops it will be one to watch!

If you are in the path of this storm, do not wait to take cover until you see it...if there is a tornado it will be rain wrapped and almost impossible to see!

Re: Tropics Update Tuesday September 4, 2012
« Reply #14 on: September 04, 2012, 05:14:03 PM »
The tropics remain the same, except for the addition of Tropical Storm Michael.  TS Michael was Tropical Depression #13.  TS Leslie is still out there as well and may become the first major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) this season.  Both storms are forecast to remain out at sea and not affect the US.  Leslie will track the closest to the coast, as the models and official tracks continue to move west with each advisory.  The closer it tracks to the coast, the worse effects from the storm we will see.  TS Michael should remain far out to see with little to no effects for our area.

Re: Tuesday Night Update
« Reply #16 on: September 04, 2012, 07:40:44 PM »
Storms will continue to move in throughout the night and during tomorrow.  They will come in squalls, much like they did today.  Some storms could be strong to severe with damaging winds, dangerous lightning, hail and heavy rains.  Some storms could even spawn tornadoes.  This is just the nature of these tropical remnants.  Flood and Flash Flood conditions will continue as well with these storms.

There are not widespread conditions enough to post Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Watches at this time, but individual cells embedded within the storm clusters could bring severe thunderstorms.  There have been 2 Tornado Warnings today within NJ, both initially Doppler Radar indicated.  This means that the NWS PHI/Mount Holly saw conditions on radar that would indicate a possible tornado or imminent tornado and issued a Warning for the area in the path of the storm.  1 of these warnings did cause a funnel cloud and trees down and could have caused a tornado.  That will be determined in the upcoming days.

When a Tornado Warning is issued, it is issued for an entire County.  Unless you have the ability to read radar and determine direction of travel, you should immediately take cover if you are in the Warned Area.    Conditions within the Tornado Warning Areas could quickly become dangerous and deadly and tornadoes can not always be seen!

Best to keep some form of Weather Alert on tonight, just in case weather conditions get bad!

 TT^

The majority of the rain and thunderstorms will be concentrated over northern NJ today.  There are already several Watches & Advisories up already.  Surf conditions will continue to be dangerous with 6-8 foot waves from the long period swells approaching the coastline.  This long period swell and building seas will continue for upwards of 7-10 more days until Leslie gets passed the area.

Currently in NJ

Flash Flood Watch for Mercer, Salem, Gloucester, Camden and northwest Burlington Counties until this evening

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING...

THE FLASH FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES FOR

* THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES. IN DELAWARE...NEW CASTLE. IN NEW
  JERSEY...CAMDEN...GLOUCESTER...MERCER...NORTHWESTERN BURLINGTON
  AND SALEM. IN SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA...BUCKS...CHESTER...
  DELAWARE...MONTGOMERY AND PHILADELPHIA.

* THROUGH THIS EVENING

* HEAVY RAIN HAS ALREADY FALLEN IN MUCH OF THE REGION. ANOTHER
ROUND OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH HEAVY RAIN IS EXPECTED
FOR TODAY. RAINFALL TOTALS OF AN INCH OR TWO ARE ANTICIPATED TO
BE COMMON TODAY WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS. SOME PLACES COULD
PICK UP AN ADDITIONAL TWO TO FOUR INCHES OF RAIN.

* URBAN AREAS REMAIN HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO FLASH FLOODING. STORM
DRAINS ARE USUALLY NOT ABLE TO DEAL WITH A LARGE VOLUME OF RAIN
WATER IN A SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME...RESULTING IN FLOODING OF
ROADWAYS AND AREAS OF POOR DRAINAGE.

* THE THREAT FOR HEAVY RAIN WILL COME TO AN END TONIGHT AS A WEAK
FRONTAL BOUNDARY PUSHES THE EXCESSIVELY HUMID AIR MASS OFF THE
  COAST.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD
TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

YOU SHOULD MONITOR THE FORECAST AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION
IF FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS ARE ISSUED.
