Again welcome aboard.  Well this time of year is the ramp up time.  As the bait is starting to move out of the bays and rivers to begin their migration to deeper water the big guys are right with them.  Blues and of course the stripers are the main catches starting as the water cools down.  I have heard of some very few but still in the mis are the false albacore.

As far as the rod length.  The big guns, at least for me are out.  I like to throw metals and maybe some swimmers but all the metals are with teasers.

They are easy to rig up as you will find out everyone has their own way of setting them up.  My method would be to tie a dropper loop roughly 18" above the lure and attach the teaser to that.  Colors to think of would be yellows, greens, and blacks and in any combination of the three.

I like to use the AVA's in the 17 to 27 depending on the surf.  If it is really churning go heavier.

As far as where to throw your offerings well you could read an article I posted a few years back "Reading the Sand" where I explain the process.  But what you want to look for is a definite break in the wave action to show you where the break in the bar is at and depending on the tide target the inner edges of the break or if the tide is going out target the outer edges of the break.

That is why I like to use a 8' rod that I know will reach almost where ever I want it to.

I hope this helps.

Happy Catching

Paul

Buster where are you located ( home base ) The surf fishing will soon be in full swing. I am mostly a Dead  Stick surfer meaning Bait. I do cast artificial but only to schools close in. My advise is to Visit The fishermen's Beach, North Beach. south end. of the hook  bring what you have and take in what others are doing.
you will also see the what you will need such as Waders Rod and Reel start simple may have tried it and never went back. Its not for everyone. you will spend many hours and days with nothing then that blitz hits and you forget the bad days. Right now Blues of all sizes are hitting. Bass also with the best to come. False Albies area big hit and miss.
Good luck post your adventures and we may Hook up. I will and am fishing the bay shore now the front beaches when things are right, Tide, wind, weather,
Good luck Bill
