Irish Ayes Striper Start Up
« on: October 20, 2012, 04:15:53 PM »
The fall striper season has begun on the Irish Ayes. Although not an all our bashing we did bring two nice stripers back to the dock and two bluefish that Dave wanted (yuck  ;D).

Broke Shark River Inlet at around 8 am (yeah, I'm not an early bird) and had some reading right off the get-go. Put some lines down but no takers.  Headed north and stopped on some more reading with the same results, nothing.  Got north of the infamous Red Church and saw some gannets hitting the water. Tried jigging with again the same results, nothing.

Out come the trolling gear. With two rods inserted into Tony Maja out rodders (man I love those things) we put out umbrellas with shads on them. About five minutes into the troll, fish on. Over the gunnel and into the box with a twenty five pound bass. Nice way to break the ice. Off on the troll again and a blue fish is cranked to the boat. A quick release at the side of the boat and off to the hunt again.

Made the turn and went over the same area we picked up the first fish and it was fish on again. Another keeper striped bass in the box, this one was about a fifteen pounder.

Several more blue fish, keeping two, and four just short striped bass finished off the day. Only caught one fish jigging and that was a bluefish.

Back to the dock, filleted the fish and cleaned the boat. All ready for another trip tomorrow. We'll see if we can get the same results and hopefully even better.

Looks like a nice weather window for the week ahead. I have a new camera, it works well, but I have to remember to bring it with me tomorrow to get some pics.  TT^

Just an fyi Tom, it was reported to be slow at the rocks today. We lucked into seeing some gannets diving and found fish near them.
Good luck tomorrow if you get out.  t^
