MASSIVE fishkill in Keyport/Matawan Creek

Appears their was a massive peanutbunker kill in Matawan Creek right by my marina. I will be down tomorrow to peep it out a bit. Here is a reported pic from there (Pic is legit):

Any report/speculation on the cause?

Nope, none yet.

tHERE ARE SOOOO many peanuts in that area that if that pic represents all the dead ones, it seems to be a small drop in the bucket there.

Think this happened past day,so I am sure they are on it now.

Not that bad compared to what we had 6-7 yrs ago in Keansburg. I was told it may be caused by the run-off of fertilizers after a rain.

Read that a biologist that checked the oxygen levels in the water there 2 days in row now said the level is EXTREMELY low.

Yea. Maybe they are Low, but what causes them to be low. We just had a big Rain Day, and I would think the oxygen levels would be up, with all the fresh water run-off in the creeks.
There are plenty of live ones still there as I threw my cast net tonight and had 50+ in one throw.

How much longer do the adult bunker stay in the harbors...  I hate to buy a flat of bunker to bluefish with when they are right in front of me... When do they start heading out.

NIck, why not use peanuts for bluefish?

Instead of cutting an adult in 5 pieces, cut peanuts in half.

MUCH cheaper, just as (maybe more) effective that way.

Hell, nothing like chumming blues and livelining peanuts to catch them on.

thats very true... go pick some up over there and put them in your freezer...  I can't see why they won't work for the albies either.  We will need some larger ones though for my chum grinder...  It will take a ton of those peanuts to have a good chum slick.  And with all that bait in the water, I hate to have to buy a flat of bunker and a bucket of chum...  At least for the seabass, I still have a bag of frozen shucked clams from the spring striper season.

I don't think you eed a flat of frozen bunker.
Maybe a 5gal bucket of frozen chum and then a cooler and livewell full of nuts should be just fine.

that should work...  I hate frozen chum...  If I can get a bunch of fresh large bunker, all I have to do is grind a few directly into the water every few minutes once I get a good slick.  The frozen chum isn't always bunker, even though it supposed to be.  They grind up a bunch of fish scraps to make those chum gallons...  For us to get REAL, FRESH bunker chum will increase our chances to catch anything...  and we don't have to wait for the bucket to un freeze..  I might have to go to the harbor the night before for the bunker.
