Interview with Eric Neumayer?
« on: September 12, 2007, 09:28:19 PM »
Hi All,

Who is Eric Neumayer? He is the gentleman in the boat when Monica Oswald caught her potential IGFA All Tackle World Record Fluke.

The following is an article by Tom Schlichter of Newsday:

Revisiting another big fish, on Friday I spoke with Erich Neumayer who was on the boat, he said, when Monica Oswald hooked a potential record fluke.

According to Neumayer, after catching and releasing two shorts, a pole in a rod holder doubled over. Oswald grabbed the pole and the struggle began.

Neumayer said he attempted to net the huge fluke as Oswald coaxed it alongside the boat, but the fish's nose hit the net, causing it to dive. Given a second chance, he slid the net under the fish, which was so big it didn't fit completely into the mesh.

Neumayer stated Oswald did not "back down" on the fish as the motor was off. He confirmed she damaged the gills removing her jig, as Oswald previously stated, but claimed the gills separated fully from the body at the weigh-in as the fish was placed on the scale, removed, and then hung on the scale again.

The potential record, which Neumayer described as "not happy," was placed in a 4-foot long fish box with approximately 20 ice cubes.

"We put it in fine," he said, "When we took it out, it was all beat up."

The pair fished a bit longer in the same spot figuring that big fluke travel in bunches. They decked another keeper before heading back to port.

Neumayer, who was on board - and skunked - when Oswald decked weakfish weighing 15 and 18 pounds one day last year, said his fishing partner is a good angler and extremely lucky.

"I just wish," he said, "that some of her luck would rub off on me."

Thanks all,

Capt. Ed

this report was nice to hear.  Most of the rumors where indeed facts, but not exactly.  I can see how the gills can get damaged from that much weight being hung for a while.  20 icecubes isn't enough to keep it fresh.  She was lucky to get a second chance as that fish took a dive.

Now the official congratulations to her... and it was also admitted, that she is very LUCKY.. which is also something all fisherman need in there corner.

Her version is different than his...backing down, ice, other fish caught or not caught, what happened to the other keeper, etc.

So standing on the fish, ripping the bucktail out which Monica stated was the reason for the decapitation means nothing since the fish was "fine" when it was put in the cooler, fish box, maybe had some ice in it but didn't...

Maybe if their stories matched I could believe 5hrug

Again nothing matches up with her initial stories.. and why did'nt he comes forward when the fish was still available for viewing..

I'm glad we had a long break from this drama.. she needs come forward with the lies..

This is not a new interview but rather one that was printed about 10-14 days after the catch.

Here we go again.
Where and when was it ever stated that what anyone is referring to was her story.  The only thing that I have hear or read was someone said that is what she said.  That does not mean that it is in fact, what she said.

When it's an interview and there are quotes involved I take it as being what she said.  That's just me though ::)

Thanks Capt for the first I have heard from her witness.... Frankly I think she waffles too much on her accounts of the catch and happenings after. It's still good if it gets me thinking about fishing instead of work tho.

Nah, I tossed a few sticks of TNT into the water and then just netted it when it came to the surface.   t^

I have to disagree with you Capt Ed. I feel that there are TOO many "coincidences" associated with this fish for me to accept the story. One of MY main concerns is that, having a current world record, she should realize that the ONLY thing to do was to put the fish in the box w/o any muss or fuss and include about 6-8 feet of her reel's line, for testing. Why would you attempt to dehook the fish??? No fish hung from a scale is going to have it's throat broken, most of the weight is on the spine. If IGFA gives her the record then so be it, but I am MORE than skeptical.         :-\ ::) :-\
