Skate for Dinner???
« on: December 19, 2012, 12:11:11 PM »
I was watching Chuck's day off on the cooking channel, and he made Skate for his landlord for dinner.  :-\ I didn't think they would be any good to eat. But he said it's a white fish and really good eating. He had big, long, thin pieces he breaded and fried. I guess anythings good if you fry it huh!  ;D You guys ever eat it?

Yea...I heard that too, but not the 'good' ones.  :-\ Sorta like the processed crab I suppose. I remember reading a post that you didn't eat fish. Any reason why? My dad didn't eat it either...but he sure loved to fish!  clp

never cared to.  used to eat fish sticks when I was a kid but that's different.  Eat tuna from a can still, lol.  I'll fish all day and night but not eat it. lol.  I've also got a very sensitive stomach, so trying new foods is not usually a good thing.  lol

I tried skate once. Way too much trouble to get a fillet off to make me want to eat them again IMO.

Had it at David Burke's Formagiore restaurant in Rumson. Very good.
You need a large skate and fillet the wings.

Exactly.  Back in my economics class in HS we did a report on consumer perception using synthetic oil as our example.  In the 80's synthetic oil was put on the market and sold as a better alternative to dino oils at a fraction of the cost.  Nobody bought it and it was pulled off the shelves.  People thought it must not be good if it's that cheap.  Later on it was simply rebranded with new, cooler labeling and then priced at 2-4 times the cost of dino oils in the early 90's.  They couldn't keep the shelves stocked fast enough.

Point being?  Tell people that skate, searobin, and dogfish are garbage fish and no one will bother with them.  Put it on a menu in a fancy restaurant and charge $30 a filet and boom, delicacy.

Since my uncle saw it in a local restaurant and said it was good, sure enough the next one we caught on the boat, he had to give it a try.  Guess who the sucker was who had to clean it?  I haven't tried it yet, but my uncle said it was very good and would eat it again.  If this is the case, then he will be cleaning the next one.. lol

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.
