Fishing in Fort Lauderdale Happy Day Today

Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Pete Sanchez and friend from Albany, New York escaped the cold weather after the massive blizzard that attacked the northeastern coast to get some sun and warm weather here in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  We had temperatures in the low 80’s, winds out of the north, northeast at 15 mph, seas running 3-5 ft.  The Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team left the dock at Bahia Mar, Fort Lauderdale to do some deep sea sport fishing heading out to the drop off which sits in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale.

For the past few days, the Wahoo action has been fair so we decided to catch some live Bullets to use for live bait fishing later in our charter.  We started off trolling with two plainer rods, one with a 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon and the other with a black and purple sea witch in front of a double hook Mullet strip.  For surface baits we went with two Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips.  We trolled off the drop off, zig zagging from 120 ft. out to 300 ft. of water catching a couple of Bonitos along the way.  There was a little rip starting to form in 350 ft. of water, which was an ideal place to start live baiting.  We went with two live Bullets on the surface and one live Bullet down on our deep rod, all with stinger rigs.

Our first bite was a chop off on one of our surface rods.  As we kept working the rip, our deep rod bent over and the line exited the reel at a fast rate, with the rod tip bouncing up and down, which was the tell tale sign that we had a Wahoo on the end of the line.  Wahoos are the fastest fish in the ocean, clocked at 64 mph, an exciting predator to catch with razor sharp teeth and vertical silver and deep blue purple stripes and delicious to eat.   Pete was the angler and reeled in the Wahoo – our mate, Jackson, gaffed and brought the Wahoo in the boat with his head thrashing back and forth and the jaws ready to rip anything near him apart.  After subduing the Wahoo, Jackson put him in the fish box.

It was time to head back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
