I love trolling bunker spoons. We use Seeker rods and Penn Senators with wire. i've never used a downrigger.

BTW you don't need to use wire, you can also use a good braid.

When I troll we always use wire for spoons and Umbrella rigs....... also have a 16' leader of 80 lb Floro-Carbon on and is backed with 40' Floro-Carbon........

Remember every 10' of wire you go down 1' in the water. You can add a drail weight to the rig to shorten the amount of wire you let out.

Good Luck TT^

I HATE wire (my pops has several outfits and custom bunker spoon rods).  I will be using a drail and braid to troll umbrellas on my boat and let my pops deal with the wire (did I mention I hate catching fish with wire line)?

No downriggers.  The rod gives the spoon the big sweeping action it needs. You cant get that from a downrigger.

Although the method catches HUGE bass, I'd rather have dental surgery than fish with wire  :P

My grandfather swore by wire... I can't stand it, but then again, they didn't have braid back then either... so now we have an alternative.

If you're trolling water 40 or less than you don't need to use downriggers IMHO.

I don't mind using wire but using braid is so much easier. Plus with braid you don't need to to have the special guides.

As mentioned Seeker makes an excellant spooning rod.

I am assuming that you need some lead to get the baided line down to where it needs to be.  Any idea on the amount of weight that would be needed for say a thirty foot drop?

I bought a few bunker spoons last season with a nice lead head on the front of it with a swivel.  Its pretty heavy and will do the job to hold down the spoon.

Not 100% positive, but I think a 7 ounce drail (coupled with the weight of the spoon) should get you down that deep.

thanks for all your help. I think I will try the braid line.
now I need to know what is the best leader line length between the  trolling  sinker and the bunker spoon.
again thanks for your help.
