Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak
Sunny skies here in Fort Lauderdale FL with winds out of the east, northeast, 12-15 mph was a perfect setting to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale FL aboard the Happy Day Today with the Topshotfishing team.
Elliott Menke, the head chef of a five star restaurant in Fort Lauderdale on Las Olas Boulevard, the Royal Pig Pub, along with his assistant chefs, Jothem Slater, Matt Imbodin, Joe Steckler and Shawn Casgrove, chartered the Happy Day Today located at Bahia Mar. Once the chefs boarded the boat, a mimosa toast was had for good luck on this fishing charter.
We stopped on our way out to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait. Twenty minutes after leaving the dock, two kites were flying with lines in the water off of the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, FL which sits in 120 ft. of water. Our first fish was a Mahi Mahi on the right short kite, and Matt was our angler. Immediately the Mahi Mahi swam over to the left short kite and tried to eat that bait as well – obviously, he was a very hungry fish. We were traveling with the current to the north rather quickly since the current was going fast at 2 knots. Matt brought the Mahi Mahi to the side of the boat, and Jackson, our mate, gaffed the fish and put it in the fish box. We reset the kites again with Goggle Eyes. Our next bite was on the left long, but it pulled the hook – with the reflection of the sun on the bait, I could not tell what type of fish it was. The right long bait got very nervous, a good indication that a predator was approaching. As the predator jumped out of the water and grabbed the bait, we could see we had a good size Mahi Mahi on the line. Even in the distance, as he was jumping, we could see it was a large Cow. Twenty minutes later, Elliott, who was the angler, brought the Mahi Mahi to the side of the boat, as Jackson gaffed it. Pictures were taken - it was difficult to tell in the picture where the fish ended and the angler began because they both wore the same colors!!!!
With ten minutes left in the trip and discussions of how they were going to prepare the Mahi Mahi’s, a black shadow appeared on the left long kite. Lethargically the predator made his move and a dorsal fin appeared, as he circled the Goggle Eye and then frantically attacked the bait. White water flying, as the Sailfish tail-walked on the water with the sun’s rays gleaming off its neon colored body. Joe was the angler and felt the full force of the Sailfish’s strength. Twenty-five minutes later, the fish was brought to the side of the boat and pictures were taken of this estimated 60 lb., 92” Sailfish.
With time exhausted and smiles on all the chef’s faces, we headed back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
