Rod repair help
« on: May 04, 2013, 12:24:46 PM »
Picked up a set of rods for a decent price. They have roller stripper and tip only, rest are normal guides.

One has a bad guide with a bent roller tip. Another has just a  bad guide.

On the roller it is an aftco, and says 14. Safe to assume that is 14/64" since that is how they are sized?

For one of the guides I measure 11mm ID from a good guide on other rod, which would be a size 16 fuji?

The other guide I measure 7mm ID from good guide on other rod, which would be fuji size 10?

How to best go about removing the current guides, heat gun and razor blade?

Is there a special thread to put back on?

What about the epoxy? Regular stuff you can buy anywhere? Or have to use some special rod epoxy?

I'm totally aware these are not gonna turn out as new, but as long as new guides are put on correctly and don't look like crap I will be satisfied.

Also I do not have a set up to spin the rods as I thread them or apply the epoxy, I'm gonna have to do it the hard way and hand spin them. I can easily make up two boards with a V notch to hold the rod as i do work on them.

Thanx, I'll check'em out. Removing all the rollers to clean and lube them up as they all were not rolling. Got one of them cleaned and lubed up,, good to go now. Four more to go.

Also, some of the epoxy on the under side of the rod is scratched up,, can that be wet sanded with super fine paper to shine it back up and remove the hash?

Greg, I read somewhere when I cleaned up roller guides on one of my rods, NO LUBE. As temping and as much sense as it seems .....Clean them up so they spin freely. Personally after being a maintenance mechanic for 25 years I don't see the harm in a light coating of WD. I did as they said and just cleaned mine up and reassembled and haven't had a problem......Just my 2 cents!  slt

I would use dry graphite power on the rollers.
Fishing Sandy Hook and anywhere I can get on a boat.

My biggest fear is when I die my wife sells all of my fishing tackle for what she thinks I paid for it!

I went with a light layer of penn synthetic grease. Read that lubes such as oil can gum up causing sticking. Also these are not the bearing model rollers, just a bushing for them to spin on.

Got all the rollers done and rolling nicely, except for the bent one, which I heated up and yanked off the rod, then cleaned/lubed it up and threw in the tackle box for a backup,,, ya never know
