Allow myself to introduce....myself!
« on: September 25, 2007, 01:05:57 PM »
Hi all!
I have been enjoying this great site for a while now and thought I would step out of the shadows and intoduce myself. I'm 44 and live in upstate NY., but do all my SW fishing in NJ.. I currently work providing tech. support for a Manhatten daytrading firm, but prior to this spent about 20 years working in retail sporting goods, including about 7-8 years in the fishing/archery depts. at the Sportsmen's Center in Bordentown. My brother and I recently realized a dream and bought a nice boat for SW that we are keeping in Keansburg.. We got in late this summer, catching the last couple weeks of the fluke season, but are having a ball so far, and have yet to see the skunk in the new boat (although I'm sure I just jinxed that!). While I've fished the NJ salt for many years, my previous boats kept me mostly in the bays or on head boats, so I'm looking forward to extending our horizons. We've been sticking to inshore spots so far, but am hoping to venture offshore a bit after I gain more experience and confidence with the boat. I greatly appreciate the info this fine site provides and hopefully I can contribute in some way as well. Cya's on the water!

Welcome aboard a great site.  Where in upstate NY do you live?

Welcome aboard.  I too live a stones throw away from the Sportsman's Center.  Have probably seen you there a few times in the past.

Congrats on the boat and catching.  We all get the skunk one time or another, but that's fishing.

Feel free to ask questions and post answers to other's questions.  Everyone here is friendly and will give and take advise from all.

Looking foward to your posts.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! Mate Mike, I live in Highland, which is on the banks of the Hudson just across the river from Poughkeepsie.. Hotrod, nice grab on the Sirrius, but I'm not much help when in comes to investing as all my trading experience concerns day trading..we rarely hold a stock for more than a few hours! Being as your position is up about 100% from your entry price, I'd say you're doing fine!  t^  This board is by far the friendliest I've seen and I thank you all again for your kind words

Welcome to the site TreeBeard, its a great one to be a part of. From saltwater fishing to freshwater fishing, to gps coordinates to recipes. It has it all. My father used to live in Esopus, which I dont think is to far from poughkeepsie. Do any salmon fishing up in salmon river?, I mean  your not THAT far from there.

Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.

Thanks fishon! Esopus actually borders the town I live in..I do alot of bass fishing on Esopus lake.. I have fished the Salmon river for many years, however I don't go up for the salmon as much as I used to, preferring instead to wait a bit for the crowds to thin and then go and target Steelheads.. I also have been heading for the Erie tribs in recent years for most of my Steelheading, as they usually produce incredible numbers most trips. The fish are not as big as the eastern Lake Ontario steelhead tend to be, but the streams get absolutely jammed with them at times.. The other thing I like about the Erie tribs is there are about 20 good streams in a 30 mile stretch , so if ones not producing there are plenty of options..and unlike the SR their flow is not controlled by a power company, so its easier to predict the fishing based on rainfall and conditions..But I'll admit for pure pullin fun, those big Salmon River kings are hard to beat!

Yes treebeard, i hear ya. It is crazy when there are tons of people fishing, because half the guys are a$$ holes and are rude. I always hear people arguing when i go up. I went up last weekend for some early salmon and caught a nice 18 pound king. They take your line for a run man, and it is fun. I am heading back up either Oct. 4th for 2 nights or Oct. 11th. Spend alot of money on weights, hooks, and rooster tails because there are alot of snags. But man is it worth the fun when there is action. Never got a chance to fish erie. Have been to salmon river a few times, and to niagara river a few times where I caught a nice 16 lb steelhead a few years ago. good times
