Opening day Flatties- Late report
« on: May 20, 2013, 08:01:31 PM »
Sorry it's late..busy weekend of traveling plus a backlog at work waiting for me today..Anyhow.. decided to take a break from the bass fishing up here, so I  hauled my jon boat Clamenza out Friday  and loaded it on the trailer for the  pull down to NJ for the Fluke opener.. The plan was for an old-school tin boat rodeo, which had been a tradition with my friends and I for many years prior to getting the bigger boat.. with my bud Dibbs teaming up with me, and  Ross and his bro Butch in their little V-hull.. After enjoying a few minutes of watching the ramp follies, rofla  slid off the trailer into our favorite tidal river a bit after 0600.. Picked our way through the maze of other hopefuls and rental craft and found a little real estate to start.. We enjoyed a torrid bite through the last hour or so of outgoing with a very surprising  keeper ratio.. By the time the tide turned, we had 8 nice keepers in our cooler, releasing about as many shorties.. and team Rossie had 4 in the penalty box.. At the turn, the switch was thrown.. the water temp dropped a couple degrees, and the bite stopped dead for about 5 hours.. During that time we worked a few spots in the river, only picking a shortie on occasion.. got a nice visit from some very friendly DEP officers who checked our fish and wished us well.. slt  Stuck it out till the incoming slowed.. as the temp started to come back a bit.. and so did the bite.. with some very respectable fish..  managed to finish out our boat limit in short order, with mostly nice, no-measure slabs to about 21" hitting the cooler.. I fished the same 3/8 oz bucktail tipped with a spearing on a light spinner all day.. In addition to the Fluke, 1 small blue made an appearance as well as a  nice 20" weakfish around midday ..stuck around for about an hour more waiting for Ross and Butch to finish up, during which time I landed 4 more nice keepers  that where released to fight again, and several more shorts.. Team Rossie was just 2 short of their 2 man limit when we decided we had enough and loaded the tinnies back up around 4pm..tired, damp, and wearing silly grins..   TT^  chrz
