Tropical Storm Andrea Archives & Discussion
« on: June 05, 2013, 07:05:50 PM »
Well, no longer an unnamed tropical heavy rain event, Aircraft Reconnaissance Flight this afternoon revealed a closed area of low pressure with sustained tropical storm force winds and have now named the disturbance Tropical Storm Andrea.  This is the first named storm of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. This does not really change anything for our area unless some unintended/forecast strengthening occurs  in the Atlantic, but waters temps are not at their warmest points yet.  I will keep an eye on this and continue to update in this thread.  Still, right now this is a rain event of 2-3 inches.  Greater than 3 inches will cause some river flooding for NJ.  Areas north and west of NJ have some higher risks of inland river flooding (see map below).

Here are some stats:

I saw that when it was first posted.  Well at least for the most part all bet 2 trees are removed from the property.  A total of 10 trees are gone, but at least I know they can't damage the house further.  Now all I have to worry about is the wind and flying debris.

That's good!  I still have trees all around.  Oakridge and Silveridge Sections of town have so many large, old trees...I worry every storm.  Immediately around the house, I only have to worry about 1 tree in the front that shouldn't be a problem.  Hopefully, this won't be much at all!

Cool charts. Are they new?

The NWS is always changing there internet technologies around.  I don't think these are really new...I just haven't had to use them before.  There are so many models, charts and data...during big multi-parameter storms like this, it will make your head spin.  The promise from the National Hurricane Center after Sandy was that they will see a storm through from beginning to end...which they will do, but it still does not change which department issues what products on the storm.  For example, here we have precipitation and river flooding possibilities, handled by 2 different offices... nts ;D

Hey Matt,

Here we gowith a new season.  All the trees are down around the house esxcept fro 2 they are on the west part of the house.  The prevailing winds should not give them any problem as the nor'easters and the hurricanes all have winds out of the north east or the south east for the most part.

I just could not get myself to have all the trees cut down.

Hey Paul,

Right into a new season...it never ends!  Looking at a new area coming off of Africa already.  They are calling for an active season...not that I want or need any more storms, but nothing we can control.

I should be OK with the trees too...I hope.  We'll see.  I just installed a rain gauge, quickly, in time for this event.  I am volunteering with CoCoRAHS and its a good learning experience for the kids.

As of the 5PM update from the NHC Tropical Storm Andrea has transitioned to a Post Tropical Low.  This does not change any of the forecasts, nor the effects NJ will feel.  This change over and track has been right on with their forecast.  Heavy rains still affecting much of the state and will continue into the overnight.  There is still a lot of moisture south of the area.  Stay alert to any flooding concerns.

TT^ What a mess...again!  That happens often on the barrier islands (not to this extent).  I guess when you are at or below sea level, it's like a bowl.  The need better drainage.
