Tropical Storm Andrea
« on: June 06, 2013, 11:38:52 AM »
Tropical Storm Andrea is sitting off the Northwest Coast of Florida right now.  Andrea underwent some minor strengthening last night with sustained winds up to 60 mph and a pressure drop to 997 mb.  Heavy rains, thunderstorms and tornadoes have battered the entire state of Florida in the overnight, with coastal areas seeing up to a 5 foot storm surge and tropical storm force winds.  Andrea will continue moving northeast and the track has the storm staying inland until VA when it will then enter Atlantic Ocean waters.  Strengthening is not expected and at this point the storm would be considered post tropical/extra tropical storm passing close to the coast of NJ overnight Friday into Saturday.  Depending on the timing and speed, conditions could begin clearing by Saturday Afternoon.  Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued as far north as the Baltimore Canyon at 36N.

For our area, TS Andrea will be interacting with a frontal boundary approaching the area.  This will bring increased rains to the area.  Statewide rain totals are looking at between 3-5 inches now beginning as scattered showers tonight and Friday Day and increasing to steady rain through Saturday Morning.  Rain could be locally heavy at times depending on the placement of rain bands, which is not forecastable.  This increase in rain will bring localized flooding and flash flooding conditions as well as some minor/moderate river and small stream flooding Saturday into Sunday.  If your areas is prone to flooding from rain, you will likely flood from this event.  NE/E Winds could be gusty at times, averaging around 20 knots with some gusts from 25-40 knots max.  Winds will eventually shift to the Northwest.  Storm surge, will be 1-2 feet, with higher amounts in more northern areas.  Both tropical and extra tropical guidance are not showing a large increase in surge, except for 0.5-2 feet, which is less than High Astronomical Tide in most areas.  This could still cause minor coastal flooding.  The models have still not come around to water conditions changing.  However, with gustier winds and seas 6-7 feet with a long swell period of 10-12 seconds, Small Craft Advisories are likely and water conditions will be cautious to hazardous.  This will likely be issued Friday Afternoon through at least Saturday Afternoon.  Again, the models and forecasts have not completely acknowledged the storm.  Surf conditions will increase from moderate to high averaging 4-6 foot waves with possibility of bigger waves.  Surf will be rough with high rip current threats and gusty NE winds to 40 knots.

So be ready for rain and flooding threat.  If you live near a inland body of water, especially a larger river, flooding could become a bigger issue for you.  Coastal threats looks relatively low as do winds.  Winds will be stronger along the coast, though.  However, grounds are well saturated statewide and trees could easily uproot from the wet ground and increased winds.  Power outages are possible as well.  Remember, evacuate if you are in a flood risk area.  You can't hide from the water.  Do no try and drive or walk through standing flood waters.  Even the slightest amount of standing water could carry electricity from a downed wire quite a distance.  We all know the drill and routine.  Just be smart and safe!

I will update as the information comes in and changes.

Here is a link to NOAA/NWS Storm Surge and Tidal Flooding Monitor.  It is basically buoy data.  So far, even for locations in landfall path, only 2 feet or so of surge and 35 knot winds.  Not too bad!  Not much damage or flooding reported out of Florida as well.

Re: Friday Morning Update
« Reply #6 on: June 07, 2013, 10:26:36 AM »
Andrea is still a tropical storm sitting in South Carolina moving NE at 28 mph with 45 mph winds and a lower pressure at 996 mb.  The track has shifted slightly the last couple Advisories from east to west some.  The track will affect precipitation totals, but either way we are looking at a solid 2-3 inches of rain with locally higher amounts up to 4-5 inches or more.  Flood Watches, Small Craft Advisories and Rip Current Statements have been issued by the NWS for NJ.  NWS NYC has issued Coastal Flood Advisories for areas around New York Harbor, along parts of Long Island and Staten Island.  However, storm surge/tidal flooding totals have not changed from 1-2 feet.  Specifically parts of Delaware Bay/River and Raritan Bay have the highest chance of 1-2 feet.  There is a 10% chance this number is exceeded up to 3 feet.  This is a VERY LOW chance.  The rest of the coastal areas will only see 0-1 feet of surge and again there is a 10% chance that is exceeded up to 2 feet.  Easterly winds will pick up some, increasing to 20 knots with 35 knot gusts possible.  Cape May tides are running 0.3 feet above normal and would require at least a foot of surge to cause minor coastal flooding.  Rain will come in waves as rain bands cross cross the state.  Some pockets may be heavy at times.  In about an hour and half, I picked up another 0.6 inches of rain.  These pockets of heavy rain are what will cause the flash flooding.

There are not many changes with this forecast except for the location and strength of the storm and the track.  Again, we are not at risk of any severe weather with this storm, however just to our south in the Carolinas (as well as in Florida yesterday), weak, but destructive water spouts and tornadoes were spawned by this system.  While our area is not at risk, it is something to keep in mind, just in case.  These storms already have a lot of spin and energy to them so it doesn't take much drop a tornado or water spout down.  If you live in an area that floods be aware and keep an eye on the status of the River Gauges and be alert to any Advisories, Watches or Warnings that may come from the NWS.

I will keep updated on this storm and relay any of that here.  Both NWS Offices shoudl be releasing an updated Briefing by noon or so.  Stay dry and be safe!

Re: Friday Morning Updated River Forecast

...And like that Forecasts are issued with changes.  There are so many different offices issuing products and forecasts on this storm, there is no way to time it all to get one complete update.  So, I will just update as the information comes in.

This is a River Forecast Update.  Several Rivers marked "yellow" or "near flood stage" have been increased to "orange" or "minor flooding."  The list is below.  The list has changed some, so make sure you check it out if you live near a River.  All Minor Flooding is less than 1 foot and Moderate Flooding is around 2 feet.

Again, if you are unsure what you are looking out, don't hesitate to ask.  NOAA/NWS does not make these products user friendly!

Re: Severe Weather Possible Coastal Areas
« Reply #13 on: June 07, 2013, 07:49:58 PM »
I mentioned this earlier today about the possibility of severe thunderstorms or tornadoes/water spouts mainly along the coast from the approaching center of the Low.  Andrea has been a prolific tornado and water spout maker.  The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Mesoscale Discussion basically stating the same thing now.  There is a low chance of severe weather along the coast, including thunderstorms and tornadoes and/or water spouts.  There probably will not be a Watch Issued just because of the low probability, but the conditions are there.  This means if severe weather pops up it will go right to Warnings.  So, from now through the overnight, be alert to severe weather and have a way of getting Warnings, especially severe weather warnings (thunderstorm and tornado).

**There has already been a radar indicated water spout off Fire Island Inlet Long Island.

Be safe!

« Reply #15 on: June 07, 2013, 09:01:06 PM »
Post Tropical Storm Andrea center is right around the Chesapeake Bay heading NE at 35 mph.  As the center nears our area winds will increase.  Rains will continue overnight, as there is still a lot of moisture to the south that will track more NE now than NNE.  Andrea will be out of here by the morning and still leave a 60% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms during the day.

This will be the LAST update on Andrea, however I will update any urgent weather conditions or major changes.
