7/18 Sharking
« on: July 19, 2013, 02:55:09 PM »
Since losing an approx 350# thresher two weeks ago me and my buddy Adam have had the itch to get back out. Knowing that BFT are still a little out of my reach we decided to do some sharking yesterday. We know it's not prime sharking season but, hoped we could make something happen. It was about this time last year that I managed to land a small mako afterall.

Me, Adam, and brother-in-law Ralph met at the boat and we were off the dock shortly after 7:00 and headed to Monsters Ledge. We briefly motored around the SRR looking for some fresh bluefish but, found not makrs. We hit the West side of Monsters Ledge and drifted to the East wall. There really wasn't a ton of life visible. The water was 77.5 and clean green with about 10-15' visibility. At around 11 or so we had some color on the surface visible. Finally a small brown made it's way to the stern to feast on free bunker. I fed it a peice on a light rod and got it boatside to release it. More towards the Eastern side of the ledge we had a runoff on the deep line but, it didn't come tight. Right after that by the far balloon we saw a large, dorsal fin but it swam away..... Shortly after we had another runoff and it came tight. After a short 10 min fight we released a blue dog. We saw a few more fins but, no other takers.

Out of chum we trolled from the East wall through the deep water and up the North along the pots on the West wall. We marked an occasional fish but nothing attacked our spread. Hit the Stolt looking for some bottom life but it was bergalls only. Called it a day and was back at the dock by 5. All in all it was a good day.

Fred, fishing the "Kristy Marie" from Manasquan River Club. Channels 16/67/68.

Nice try.  Starting this coming week I will be going out off the surf in the evenings to see what's around.  I am hearing that the shark population is starting to appear.  Sooooo, its time to replace the batteries in the head lamps and stock up on rod tip glow sticks...

Happy Catching

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.
