9/30 Mixed Bag and ..... an Albie
« on: October 01, 2007, 01:13:56 PM »
Late start with Chris, Steve, and Paul aboard. Planned for seabass if conditions permitted, or whatever else if they didn't. Around the Hook it was pretty chunky, but we perservered to see if it would lay down at all outside. It didn't. We threw some stretch 25s and 30s on for the slow ride back in and did out best to avoid the traffic. As expected, nada. Baited up some worms and some different Gulp!s, even some squid strips to see if anybody was hungry. Saw a little bait running around the SP but nothing really chasing and no birds working either. Picked at some 8-10lb blues near bottom at the 36-45 foot transition that hit the red Gulp worms and squid, but no blitzes. Drifted and motored west down the edge of the reach until near the 8 the Penn Slammer w/330 bent over and sang. Got a hold of it and worked it for about 5min before Mr. Unhappy jumped clear of the water about 30yd from the boat. I'd swear it was a flase albacore, looked it and sure peeled off line like one. Well we realized the net was gonna be a bit small as he got near the boat (yep pointy fins, sickle tail, funky coloring) he made another run and was gone, knot failure. Man was that a fun one. Everyone was pumped. Rerigged a bit heavier and I tied the knots this time but only action after that was a few sandys with one going about 36", and some more blughs. Saw a lot of boats hiding in the lee just west of the Hook but never made it over to see what all the hubbub was about- perhaps more blues?

So- anyone ever seen/heard of Albies coming into the bay? I thought you had to run off a bit for them. How are they to eat? If I'd known they were yummy I prolly woulda tried gaffin' him as we had his head in the net (man was he pissed off just before he broke off.) He hit the black gulp eels I can't wait to try at dusk in the Rip...

those albies usually stay on the ocean front.. but lately, you never know.. i have seen stranger things happen in recent years, like those Threshers on fluke rods in the Ambrose. t^

I have caught albies/bonita just north of the Ammo pier many moons ago. Not common, but they are there.

Nice report.
Weather was snotty for sure.

Nice report, sounds like fun on the run.  Albie = non-food fish, YUCK.  :P

that's what I remembered (and Paul seemed to also) so we were hesitant to break out the gaff.

Good choise.  As others have mentioned.  Great to fight, but poor on table fare.

We should have a sticky (if we already don't) on how to tell the difference between an Albie and a Bonito.

Nice Report Warren, I had a big blue on Sunday that became an acrobat. Looked like one of those Tarpon videos from Florida , he came up at the side of the boat with the wife standing ready with the net came up head shaking, mouth open and gills flared , and threw the diamond jig at her. ;)
