All the reports from the surf indicated the fishing was picking up with this recent noreaster out of the way.
I got out before sunrise Thursday. Surf was still big with a lot of white water and a light west wind. Not much going on early. About halfway into the outgoing I found some birds working that looked promising. First cast into the birds produced a barely short bass (still my biggest this year
). A couple other short bass plus a 20lber came out of that spot by other anglers.
Kept at it and landed my 1st ever weakfish....then my 2nd and 3rd weakfish
. All the weakies were legal size and were released. Picked a half dozen huge hickory shad out of that spot over the next hour. An older gentleman next to me was a bit frustrated that he was 30ft from me and getting nothing. He suggested chunking the shad for striper bait. I wasn't interesting in fishing bait, so the next couple I caught I passed off to him in hopes he would find a bass hungry for meat. Everything I caught came on metal or one of my sandeel teasers.
Back out this morning just after sunrise. I was hopeful for a repeat, but had a feeling it wouldn't happen. Surf was still big with plenty of white water. Wind was hard outta the west. Covered the whole park back and forth a few times. Never found anything that looked too interesting. Only saw a few fish landed and never more that 1 or 2 in a particular spot. Didn't have a single hit all morning. What a difference a day makes.
Work tomorrow
Back at it Sunday or Monday.
