NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Week Edition: Oct 21-25, 2013

Another week of unsettled weather patterns.  This is common for Fall and Spring, transitioning from Summer weather patterns into Winter weather patterns.  Even though the weather will be unsettled, overall the week does not look bad!  The main highlight of the week is a cold airmass moving in by midweek and dominating the area by the end of the week into the weekend.  I think the area has seen the last of the upper 60’s and 70’s with seasonable temperatures moving in.  The week will start off sunny and dry with clouds building in throughout the day, increasing into the overnight.  Temperatures will be in the mid 60’s with 40’s to 50’s overnight depending on locations.  Tuesday will bring more clouds and some rain chances through Wednesday.  These will be isolated or scattered showers with less than a half an inch of total rain.  Tuesday will have temperatures in the low to upper 60’s.  By Tuesday Night cooler air will start to move in with lows in the 30’s and 40’s.  Wednesday will have highs only in the mid to upper 50’s with lows overnight into the 30’s and 40’s again.  Rain chances should clear out by Thursday and Friday, but colder air will move in with highs in the low to mid 50’s with 30’s and 40’s at night again.  Inland winds will be calm to start the week and could get gusty and brisk, out of the southwest then northwest, by Tuesday to the end of the week.  Water conditions will vary by location and day this week.  Inshore waters will start off good with normal conditions, but by Tuesday winds could gust to 20 knots in places and by Wednesday Afternoon winds and seas could increase to Small Craft Advisory criteria and remain there through the end of the week even into the weekend.  Midshore to Offshore could see worsening conditions by Tuesday and remain for the rest of the week.  Surf and beach conditions will start off good and by Wednesday will see some increased winds and rougher, higher surf that could last into the weekend.  Water temperatures are in the low to mid 60’s with upper 60’s around the 20nm line and east.  UV Index will be Moderate to start the week, Low on Wednesday and Thursday then Moderate again on Friday.  

A high pressure system over the DELMARVA coastal waters will move farther out to sea Sunday Night and Monday.  A cold front will cross the area on Tuesday.  A low pressure system will form on this frontal boundary and pass east of the area on Wednesday while moving northeast towards the New England Coast on Wednesday Night.  A strong Canadian high pressure system will build across the Plains States Thursday into Friday before moving east on Friday.  The High is expected to settle along the Eastern Seaboard next weekend.

The weekend forecast is up in the air right now.  So far it looks dry and sunny with a mix of clouds.  Cold air will be in place over the area with highs in the 50’s and lows in the 30’s and 40’s.  Water and surf conditions will improve some on Saturday before winds increase again in the afternoon just at or below SCA criteria and will continue through Sunday.

Tropics are quiet again for the Atlantic, but the Pacific is quite active!

Good morning!  Chilly for some and cold for others, this is probably the coldest morning of this season, so far.  Sunny with a few clouds mixed in.  Clouds will continue to build in throughout the day becoming partly cloudy tonight.  Dry conditions today with no rain in the forecast.  High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 60’s with overnight lows in the low 50’s inland and coastal areas with low 40’s across northern/northwestern parts of the state.  Light winds out of the south at 5-10 mph.  This morning is only a preview of the colder air to come later this week.  Time to get out the Winter clothes and coats and check that heat!

Water conditions are good for today with a west-southwest becoming more southerly during the day.  Raritan Bay will have west winds 5-10 knots becoming south in the afternoon with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have west winds 5-10 knots becoming south in the afternoon with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have southwest winds around 5 knots becoming south in the afternoon and then 5-10 knots tonight with seas 1-2 feet.  Inshore ocean waters will have varying winds from the west to the south even some northwest winds at 5-10 knots with seas 1 foot at 9 seconds increasing to 2-3 feet at 9 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have varying westerly winds becoming southwest in the afternoon with seas 1-3 feet at 9 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are good.  Light winds varying out of the west will change to southerly winds.  Winds will be light this morning around 5 knots and increase 5-10 knots in the afternoon.  Surf is calm with waves 1 foot or less becoming normal with wave heights increasing to 1-2 feet with a light 1 foot east-southeast swell at 9-11 seconds.  UV Index is Moderate at 4/15.

Good morning!  Another chilly to cold start for the day.  Some areas saw overnight lows colder than forecast, while overall, this morning will be the warmest start for the week.  Overcast with a mix of sun and clouds becoming partly sunny to mostly cloudy with clouds increasing throughout the day to cloudy tonight.  0%-50% chance of showers today and tonight with the greater chances tonight.  Showers will begin across the northwest and move into the state today just ahead of the cold front.  High temperatures will warm into the mid to upper 60’s inland and along the coast with low 60’s across northern areas.  Overnight lows will be in the mid 40’s to low 50’s inland and along/on the water with upper 30’s across northern areas.  Winds will be from the west at 5-10 mph.

Water conditions are rated good for all locations, except this afternoon will be cautious for Offshore areas.  Winds will be light to moderate to start increasing to more than 15 knots for most places and over 20 knots offshore.  Raritan Bay will have southwest winds 5-10 knots becoming west 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots before changing to the northwest at 5-10 knots tonight and then north late.  Seas will be 1 foot or less building to 1-2 feet then subsiding to 1 foot or less by tonight.  Barnegat Bay will have southwest winds 9-13 knots becoming west-northwest 6-11 knots tonight and then north-northeast after midnight with seas around 1 foot then 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have west winds around 10 knots becoming northwest at 5-10 knots tonight then northeast after midnight with seas 1-2 feet and visibility after midnight to 1-3 nm.  Inshore ocean waters will have southwest winds 10-15 knots becoming west-southwest at 12-17 knots in the afternoon.  Seas will be 2-3 feet at 9-10 seconds with an increased short chop wind waves down to 4 seconds this afternoon in places and limited visibility of 1-3 nm after midnight.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have southwest/west-southwest winds 9-13 knots increasing to 13-22 knots in the afternoon with seas 2-3 feet at 7-10 seconds becoming 3 feet at 4 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are good to ok.  Winds will increase this afternoon varying from the southwest to west-southwest and then the west-northwest tonight at 8-15 knots increasing to 10-20 knots this afternoon and tonight.  Surf is normal and may become a little rougher at 1-2 feet at 8-10 seconds increasing to 1-3 feet at 8-10 seconds with short chop waves around 4 seconds possible in places with a 1-3 foot east-southeast swell.  Surf temperatures are in the low 60’s.  UV Index will be Low to Moderate at 2-3/15.

Tropical Storm Lorenzo has formed in the Atlantic and will remain out to sea and no threat to the US.

Good morning!  Another cold to chilly start with temperatures from the 30’s to the 50’s, currently.  Cloudy with some showers across central and southern areas of the state, while northwestern NJ has some clearing skies.  Clouds will continue today, possibly mixed with some sun, but cloudy with chances of showers through the overnight for some areas.  Rain chances will be highest during the day and increasing to the south and east.  By tonight northern/northwestern areas could see some gradual clearing.  High temperatures will be in the 50’s today with lower 50’s to the north, mid 50’s for middle parts of the state and upper 50’s for southern areas.  Overnight lows will be in the upper 30’s inland, low to mid 40’s along/on the water and low 30’s across northwestern areas of the state.  A Freeze Warning has been issued for Sussex County, A Freeze Watch is in effect for Warren County and Frost Advisories for Morris, Hunterdon, Somerset, Western Passaic and Western Bergen Counties.  A cool north wind today anywhere from 5 mph to more than 15 mph along coastal areas, especially for southern NJ.

Water conditions will vary by time and location today.  This morning waters are rated good and by this afternoon water conditions will deteriorate across waters from Manasquan Inlet south to Delaware and for all Midshore to Offshore areas.  Low pressure tracking along the stalled cold front will bring some gusting winds and increased seas.  Small Craft Advisories have been issued for MI to Delaware including the lower portion of Delaware Bay from noon Wednesday through 6AM Thursday for right now for winds to 25 knots and seas 3-4 feet on the ocean.  Areas north of Manasquan Inlet will see gusty winds and building seas, but they should remain below SCA criteria.  Raritan Bay will have northeast winds 5-10 knots becoming north late today then northwest 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less building 1-2 feet tonight.  Barnegat Bay will have northeast winds 5-10 knots becoming north during the day then west-northwest around 10 knots at night with seas 1 foot or less building to 2 feet at night.  Delaware Bay will have north wind 5-10 knots becoming northwest during the day at 10-15 knots with gusts to 25 knots then 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots tonight with seas 2-3 feet.  Inshore ocean waters from MI north to Sandy Hook will have northeast/north-northeast winds 5-10 knots increasing to 10-15 knots with some higher gusts to around 20 knots with seas 1-3 feet at 8-9 seconds.  Inshore waters from MI south to Delaware will have north winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots becoming northwest tonight with winds increasing to 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots with seas 2-4 feet building to 3-4 feet by tonight at 9 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore areas will have northeast/east-northeast winds 10-15 knots becoming north-northeast at 10-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots tonight and seas 2-4 feet at 9 seconds.  Areas east of the 20nm line could see winds over 35 knots and seas 3-6 feet.

Surf and beach conditions will be good to ok.  Conditions will start off better and then deteriorate in the afternoon.  Beaches from MI north to Sandy Hook will be better than areas south of MI.  Winds will vary out of the north/northeast and change to the northwest during the day anywhere from 5-15 knots increasing to 10-20 knots.  Surf will go from normal to rough with wave heights 1-2 feet increasing to 2-3 up to 2-4 feet with a 2 foot east swell changing to a northeast swell tonight at 9 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the low 60’s.  UV Index is Low at 1/15.

Tropics are unchanged with TS Lorenzo out at sea and staying out to sea.

Good morning!  COLD…that about sums it up!!  …And, many places saw lows below forecast temperatures.  Currently, temperatures range from the mid 20’s to upper 40’s with Sussex County being the cold spot and Cape May County being the “warm” spot.  Sunny with only a few clouds mixed in and should remain sunny to mostly sunny today becoming mostly clear to partly cloudy tonight.  Dry today and for the next several days with no rain in the forecast.  High temperatures will be in the low to mid 50’s with overnight lows back into the mid to upper 30’s across most of the state with low 30’s across northwestern/northern areas and low 40’s across southeastern/extreme southern areas.  Breezy today with west winds 10-15 mph on average with less winds inland and to the north and higher gusting winds along the coast and south seeing up to 20 mph.

Water conditions are all cautious with Small Craft Advisories continued through tonight for Sandy Hook east along Long Island and south to Delaware including New York Harbor, Raritan Bay and the lower portion of Delaware Bay.  West winds will continue at 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots and seas 2-4 feet.  Locally and at times (such as mornings), winds and seas could be less, but will pick up by late morning to early afternoon.  Raritan Bay will have west winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 25 knots with seas 1-2 feet.  Barnegat Bay will have west winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots with seas 1-2 feet.  Delaware Bay will have west winds 10-15 knots increasing to 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots then diminishing tonight back to 10-15 knots with seas 2-3 feet subsiding to 1-2 feet tonight.  Inshore ocean waters will have west winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 20-25 knots with seas 2-4 feet at 5-7 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have west/northwest winds 15-25 knots with seas 2-4 feet Midshore and 4-7 feet Offshore at 7 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions are good this morning and will be good to ok this afternoon.  The main problem will be gusty winds and some slightly rougher surf.  Varying west winds 10-20 knots with gusts possible to 25 knots across the beaches today will actually keep the surf from building very high.  Wave heights this morning are calm, around 1 foot and 1-2 feet.  Surf will stay normal to potentially slightly rougher in places with wave heights 1-3 feet with a 2-3 foot westerly swell at 5-7 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the low 60’s.  UV Index will be Low to Moderate at 2-3/15.

Good morning!  Another cold start with mid 20’s to mid 40’s across the state right now with frost across some places.  Sunny with some clouds mixed in.  Skies will continue to be mostly sunny to partly cloudy then mostly clear tonight with dry conditions.  High temperatures in the low to mid 50’s.  Overnight lows into the upper 20’s and low 30’s with upper 30’s across inland urban areas and low 40’s for coastal areas.  Winds will be light to moderate out of the west at 5-10 mph, some 15 mph winds along inland coastal areas and gusty winds to 20 knots along the coast.

Water conditions will be cautious with Small Craft Advisories still in effect for Sandy Hook, east out Long Island and south to Delaware including Delaware Bay and the Delaware River.  Northwest/west winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots and seas 2-3 feet are possible today.  Raritan Bay will have west winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots diminishing to 5-10 knots late tonight with seas 1-2 feet then 1 foot or less after midnight.  Barnegat Bay will have west-northwest winds 10-15 knots becoming 7-10 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have west winds 10-15 knots becoming northwest 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots in the afternoon then diminishing tonight to 10-15 knots and then west at 5-10 knots late.  Seas will be 2-4 feet then 2-3 feet tonight.  Inshore ocean waters will have west-northwest winds 10-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots and seas 2-3 feet at 5-8 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have west-northwest winds 15-25 knots with gusts to 30 knots and seas 2-4 feet at 5 seconds.

Surf and beach conditions will be good, minus some gusty westerly winds to 20-25 knots.  Winds will be west-northwest at 10-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots.  This will keep the surf down mostly.  Right now, surf and ocean conditions are calm, with surf wave heights around 1 foot.  Surf will be normal and waves could increase 1-3 feet and more around 1-2 feet with a 2-3 foot westerly swell at 5-8 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the upper 50’s to low 60’s.  UV Index is Moderate at 3/15.
