Anyone have MMSI #?
« on: October 09, 2007, 10:35:09 AM »
Might be good to exchange #'s so we can hail each other on water and not worry about what channel each person monitors, etc.

My new VHF unit ( I purchased today) will even display a participating vessel's location on my GPS map.

Does anyone even have the VHF  connected to their GPS?

I am still using the VHF that I put on the boat when I purchased the boat new in 1994.  I don't think they even made maps then.  ;D

Perhaps it is time to upgrade the radio.

Easy to hook up, 2 wries or 3 depending on if GPS can display other vessels coordinates.

My new one (a Standard Horizon discontinued model, but still avail in some places) was only $130 shipped and can display date, time COG, SOG AND position on the radios LCD display itself, receive another vessels position AND display it via an icon on my GPS display among other things like the DSC calling features.

Would be cool to have a bunch of people programmed in and send out a group DSC call to see who is on the water that day.

Then we wouldn't need an NJSWF call sign on the radio ;)

Main reason I bought this radio was the DSC distress is easy to use (easier then my current), so if something happens to me or when I am with my son, he can hit the distress button, then call my father on the telephone and read the boats position right off of the radio display vs trying to figure it out on the GPS display (which I can't tell you how to do off the top of my head).

that is a great idea.  I do have the distress button on my radio so I know its compatable.. I will look into this when the boat comes out of the water and see if I can get this functionalble.. It will also give you the coordances of others on the radio. so no more of that bull of not tell exact locations..  ;D

Am I correct that in order to get the coordinates for another boat, they have to have the same setup?

Pretty much yes.

All radios sold in the past few years can be connected to a GPS for the DSC w/ Position.

Position send without it being a distress call? I am unclear on that. I can not see hwy it wouldn't, but you may need full DSC capability to send position.

You Definitely need the ability to receive in order to receive someone else's position tho.

That is a higher end feature my current radio does not posses.

New one does.

As far as the DSC calling feature, all new radios have it and all you need to do is program in your MMSi # (from www.boatus.com) free sign up and registration for your #.
You can then place a DSC call to another member using their number, it basically rings you up on channel 70 and then send you to do the predetermined channel to carry out conversation.

Pretty cool technology.

No sweat bro. Mine is pretty much figured out, just have to punch in to the new radio when it arrives and coonect the wires to my gps.

My current radio, one of the connectors came off. Wil be flush mounting the new one next season.

Send me the model # of your radio and GPS and I will look it up and we can bang it out in 15mn. Basically just connect the wires and program your # into your radio.

My # is: 338065272

Hi Nick,

I think your question was, "... how do I know when it is working?"

On most (if not all) radios, you will see a Satellite Icon on the radio when the GPS is connected correctly. On Standard Horizon units, you will also see time and location (Lat/Lon) on the radio.

Good luck,

Ed

I have my gps connected and it's working don't have my numbers on hand. there on the boat. I'll have them sunday. But I'll punch in the numbers you guys have and brush up on how to use it. I've never tried an mmsi call before.
