NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Weekly Edition: Dec 2-6, 2013

Moving into the first week of December, weather and water conditions will be unsettled, but not terrible.  There will be the potential for rain/showers Monday Night, Wednesday Night, Thursday and Friday.  Friday, all day, will have the highest chances statewide with showers likely at some point on Friday!  Sun and clouds will be the norm this week with cloudy skies on Friday.  Temperatures will be slightly above average for December for most areas.  High temperatures will range from the 40’s to 50’s this week with overnight lows in the 20’s to 40’s.  Monday Night into Tuesday could bring some gustier winds as well as Thursday.  Water conditions will vary by location and day this week.  However, in general, Monday into Tuesday and Thursday carrying over into Friday could see increased winds prompting Small Craft Advisories, especially across Southern waters and Midshore to Offshore locations.  The rest of the week will have good water conditions.  Surf and beach conditions look good to ok with Tuesday, Thursday and Friday having some gusty winds and increased wave heights.  The rest of the week will have light to moderate winds with normal wave heights of 1-3 feet.  Water temperatures are not changed much from this weekend.  Rivers and bays are in the low 40’s, surf temperatures are in the low to mid 40’s, inshore ocean waters are in the upper 40’s to low 50’s and midshore to offshore waters are in the mid 50’s.  UV Index will be Low at 1-2/15.

Low pressure will develop off the North Carolina Coast Sunday Night into Monday, then track northeastward and intensify toward the Canadian Maritimes on Monday and Tuesday.  A weak high pressure system then briefly builds in Tuesday Night into Wednesday before shifting offshore.  Low pressure tracking across the Midwest into South Central Canada Wednesday and Thursday will send a cold front to the East Coast Friday.  There is the potential that this front stalls along the coast as pieces of energy ride along it Friday and Saturday.  Strong high pressure from the Midwest to the Plains will then build toward the Mid Atlantic Sunday.

The weekend will start off with chances of rain on Saturday, clearing out throughout the day and then dry for the remainder.  High temperatures will be colder than during the week with a cold front moving through the area at the end of the week.  Highs on Saturday will be in the upper 30’s to mid 40’s with lows dropping into the 20’s and low 30’s with highs on Saunday only in the 30’s to low 40’s with overnight lows back down into the 20’s and low 30’s.  Water conditions look good right now.  Saturday into Saturday Night and then into Sunday could see some gusty winds, which as of right now will remain below SCA criteria.  Surf and beach conditions look good!

Good morning!  Cold and cloudy this morning with some patchy fog along the coasts.  The sun should make an appearance at some point today being partly sunny to mostly cloudy then mostly cloudy to cloudy tonight.  Despite the clouds, conditions will be dry with no rain in the forecast, although Northwestern NJ could see quick showers this morning. Temperatures will be more mild this week, starting today with upper 40’s and 50’s with some mid 40’s in northern/northwestern  NJ.  Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 30’s with low 40’s along the coast and upper 20’s across northern areas.  Winds will be calm to light today out of the east then north tonight at 5-10 mph.

Water conditions are good for today.  Tonight into Tuesday may see Small Craft Advisories issued for coastal waters with Gale Warnings already posted for Offshore waters south and north of NJ.  A low pressure system will track well offshore and move to the northeast, intensifying as it goes.  The only impact to our area will be some gustier winds to 20 knots and seas 2-4 feet Monday Night into Tuesday.  Raritan Bay will have north winds around 5 knots becoming southeast late in the afternoon then east at 5-10 knots tonight before shifting to the north again tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have variable winds around 5 knots becoming north around 5-10 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less building to around 1 foot.  Delaware Bay will have northeast winds around 5 knots becoming north tonight with seas 1-2 feet building to 2-3 feet tonight.  Inshore ocean waters will have north winds around 5 knots becoming east later today then northeast at 5-10 knots tonight then north increasing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots with seas 2 feet at 6 seconds increasing to 2-4 feet at 9 seconds tonight.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have variable winds around 10 knots increasing to east to northeast winds at 10-20 knots tonight then north to northeast at 15-25 knots after midnight with seas 2-3 feet at 6 seconds today building to 2-4 feet at 9 seconds tonight then 3-6 feet at 9 seconds after midnight.

Good morning!  Colder and cloudy with the sun trying to make it out across the state.  Patchy fog in some areas including coastal, western and northwestern parts of the state.  Clouds and fog will clear out this morning leaving way to partly to mostly sunny skies becoming partly cloudy tonight.  Dry today across the state.  High temperatures will be in the upper 40’s to low 50’s with overnight lows in the mid 30’s inland, low 40’s along the coast and the upper 20’s across northern areas.  Winds will be calm to light from the west at 5-10 mph.  There are Coastal Flood Advisories in effect for all coastal counties from Raritan Bay to the Lower Delaware River.  Low pressure will be passing offshore today heading to the northeast and intensifying as it goes.  This will cause an increase in tides today, especially this morning.  Areas that are prone to minor coastal flooding are at risk of flooding today.  Water levels will approach High Astronomical Tide values and may slightly exceed these values in some areas.

Water conditions are good for today, however Inshore waters will see seas build to 3-4 feet and Midshore to Offshore will see winds to 25 knots and seas 4-7 feet.  Raritan Bay will have north winds around 5 knots becoming north this afternoon and northwest tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have north winds 5-10 knots becoming west-northwest in the afternoon and then variable tonight with seas 1 foot or less.  Delaware Bay will have northwest winds 5-10 knots becoming west in the afternoon and south at knots tonight with seas 1-2 feet.  Inshore waters will have north winds 5-10 knots becoming northwest this afternoon then west tonight with seas 2-4 feet at 11 seconds building to 3-4 feet at 10 seconds.  Midshore to Offshore waters will  have north winds 10-20 knots with 25 knots for far eastern waters becoming west to northwest then west to southwest tonight at 5-15 knots with seas 4-7 feet at 11 seconds today subsiding to 3-5 feet at 10 seconds tonight.

Surf and beach conditions are good to ok/cautious today.  The only reason for ok to cautious is due to Coastal Flood Advisories…beyond that winds and surf will be good today.  Winds will be west to northwest at 5-10 knots increasing to around 15 knots tonight.  Surf is normal this morning becoming slightly rougher later today with wave heights 1-2 feet this morning increasing to 1-3 feet then 2-4 feet with a 2-3 foot east swell at 10-11 seconds.  Surf temperatures are still in the low to mid 40’s.  UV Index is Low at 2/15.

I want to update Friday Night's and Saturday's Weather with the vested interest in these two days for many here!

Rain chances will start tonight increasing into Friday Night then decreasing into Saturday.  2+ inches of rain are possible over the next couple of days.  The bigger concern is for mixed wintry precipitation including freezing rain possible on Friday Night into Saturday Morning.  Very cold air will move in on top of the already falling rain and start switching over.  It is going to be a mixed bag of rain, then sleet or snow and even some freezing rain possible after the temperatures drop.  Plus or minus 1 degree will make all the difference here in what type of precipitation falls.  Central and Northern NJ are in the target for this event, with just rain in the rest of the state (see maps below).  This could make for some hazardous road conditions during these times and especially on early Saturday Morning as some of you will be leaving for The Seahorse!

Any precipitation will end by afternoon on Saturday with conditions and skies slowly clearing with mostly cloudy conditions.  High temperatures will be in the mid 40's with overnight lows below freezing into the 20's and 30's.  This could pose a hazard after dark with any water remaining on the roads, freezing and becoming ice/black ice!

NWS PHI's Marine Forecast has deteriorated for Saturday with northwest winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots and seas 3-5 feet at 7 seconds.  Winds will diminish by night.  There is a possibility of Small Craft Advisories starting tomorrow through the weekend as well.  BuoyWeather and numerous other models are not depicting this scenario, but have slightly better conditions.  There is not a forecast discussion explaining their reasoning or forecast models.

Good morning!  Mild this morning with cloudy skies and dense fog and Dense Fog Advisories across Central & Southern Counties including Marine waters.  It will continue to be mostly cloudy to cloudy today.  The fog will likely stick around through the late morning/early afternoon without any sun to burn it off.  Rain is possible all day with chances increasing into tonight.  Rain will continue into Friday and Saturday.  Friday Night into Saturday will see a switch over to a wintry mix of precipitation including snow, sleet and even freezing rain across parts of Central and Northern NJ.  High temperatures today will be in the low 60’s with mid 50’s across northern/northwestern areas.  Overnight lows will only be in the mid 50’s with mid 40’s across northern areas.  South winds will be moderate at 5-10 mph increasing to 10-15 mph tonight.

Water conditions will be good to cautious today with conditions deteriorating later in the day.  Dense Fog Advisories for most waters this morning and afternoon with visibility to less than 1 nm!  Small Craft Advisories have been issued effective at 6PM for all coastal ocean waters from Sandy Hook to Delaware for gusty winds and building seas.  Discussion forecasts note SCA conditions will persist through Monday.   Raritan Bay will have south winds around 5 knots increasing to 5-10 knots then 10 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less increasing to 1-2 feet tonight with dense fog this morning/afternoon limiting visibility to less than 1 nm and limited visibility to 1-3 nm tonight.  Barnegat Bay will have south to southwest winds 5-10 knots becoming 15 knots tonight with seas 1 foot or less with dense fog this morning/afternoon limiting visibility to less than 1 nm.  Delaware Bay will have south winds around 5 knots increasing to 10 knots later today becoming southwest at 10-15 knots tonight with seas 2-3 feet and dense fog this morning/afternoon with limited visibility to less than 1 nm.  Inshore ocean waters will have south winds 5-10 knots increasing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots late today increasing to 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots tonight with seas 2-4 feet at 10 seconds building to 4-6 feet at 5 seconds tonight with dense fog this morning/afternoon limiting visibility to less than 1 nm and patchy fog this evening.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have south to southeast winds 10-20 knots becoming south to southwest 15-25 knots later in the day then southwest 20-30 knots tonight with seas 3-5 feet at 10 seconds building to 4-7 feet at 5 seconds tonight with possible areas of fog all day limiting visibility between 1-3 nm or less at times.

Surf conditions will be good to cautious.  Dense fog this morning limiting visibility to under 1 mile, even 100 yards right now.  I cannot see the water from any of the webcams from Sandy Hook to Cape May at this point in time.  Winds will be south to southeast becoming south to southwest today at 5-10 knots increasing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20-25 knots tonight.  Surf will be normal to slightly rougher with wave heights 1-3 feet with a 2 foot east swell at 10 seconds today decreasing to 5 seconds tonight.  Surf  temperatures are in the mid 40’s.  UV Index Low at 1/15.

Good morning!  Cloudy with showers across parts of the states and other parts the sun making it out temporarily.  Rain will continue today into Saturday.  Tonight rain will change over to a wintry mix for Northwestern NJ with under an inch of any accumulation.  Central and Northern parts of the state could see some of the wintry precipitation mixed in with rain as well, but no accumulation.  With cold air moving in tonight, hazardous road conditions are likely.  It is mild this morning across the southern half of the state in the low to mid 60’s with 50’s then 40’s across the northern half.  These will be the high temperatures for the day.  Temperatures will continue to drop throughout the day with mid 40’s and upper 30’s by this afternoon.  Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 30’s with upper 20’s across northwestern and some northern parts of the state.  Winds will be light to moderate from the north at 5-10 mph.

Water conditions are cautious today with Small Craft Advisories for ocean waters from Sandy Hook east to Montauk and south to Delaware.  Winds will gust to 20 knots with seas 4-6 feet today.  Raritan Bay will have west winds 10-15 knots becoming north this afternoon, then diminishing to 5 knots later today, then increasing to 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots with seas 1 foot or less building to 1-2 feet tonight with limited visibility during the day to 1-3 nm.  Barnegat Bay will have west winds 5-10 knots becoming north in the afternoon, then north-northeast tonight increasing to 10-15 knots after midnight with seas around 1 foot.  Delaware Bay will have southwest winds at 10 knots becoming north this afternoon, then 5-10 knots tonight with seas 1-2 feet building to 2-3 feet tonight.  Inshore ocean waters will have southwest winds 15-20 knots becoming west at 10-15 knots late this morning, then north in the afternoon, then 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots tonight with seas 4-6 feet at 7 seconds diminishing to 3-5 feet at 7 seconds tonight.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have southwest winds 15-25 knots becoming northeast at 10-20 knots this afternoon.  Tonight will have varying winds by location.  Northern waters will have north to northeast 5-15 knots increasing to 15-25 knots after midnight.  Southern waters will have southwest winds 20-30 knots.  Seas will be 4-7 feet at 7 seconds today diminishing to 3-6 feet at 7 seconds tonight across northern areas and increasing to 5-9 feet at 7 seconds tonight for southern waters.

Surf and beach conditions will be good to ok.  Gusty winds will vary from the south to southwest and west to southwest at 10-20 knots today becoming north to northeast tonight at 15-20 knots.  Surf is normal to a little rougher with wave heights 1-3 feet with a 3-4 foot south-southeast swell at 6 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the mid to upper 50’s.  UV Index is Low at 1/15.

Yeah, maybe some mixed sleet or snow in with the rain, but surface temperatures look to stay above the freezing mark tonight.  Sunday into Monday and then Monday and Tuesday could be a different story...cold air will already be in place, but subfreezing temps won't stay long, with 50's and then 40's for highs.  After dark and overnights are going to be the worst for possible icy/slick conditions!

Is it going to be a long winter like this?  I hope not !

I hope not either.  At least I can get on my ham radio and chat world wide.  I just have to complete fixing a few of the antennas that Sandy took out but today I was talking to France and many states in the US as well.

I fired up my Linear Amp and was pushing 600 watts and got great results from all over.  I'm ready for the indoor activities this winter.
