NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Weekend Edition: Dec 7-8, 2013

It will be a mostly wet weekend with water conditions varying by time and location.  Precipitation will not just be rain.  Friday Night into early Saturday will bring a wintry mix to Central and North Western Counties, starting as rain and with very cold air moving in and precipitation switching between sleet, snow and freezing rain and then back to rain again.  Accumulations will be under a half an inch of snow and only a few hundredths of an inch of ice.  However, it does not take much ice to cause hazardous road conditions.  Areas to the south and east should just be rain.  Rain will continue into Saturday Day tapering off by the afternoon and then temporarily clearing and becoming partly cloudy on Saturday Night.  Any remaining water on roadways or walkways will likely freeze by or after sunset on Saturday Night, making for hazardous traveling again.  Black ice will be a real concern by Saturday Night.  Sunday will bring more precipitation.  With cold air already in place precipitation will come in the form of snow and a wintry mix switching back and forth to rain.  More northern/northwestern areas of the state will see the most wintry precipitation.  Snow accumulations will be 2-4 inches in the northwest with 1-2 inches in Central Western Counties and then less than an inch for the rest of the state.  Coastal and southern areas may not see any accumulation or snow for that matter.  Ice accumulations are possible again, with a few hundredths of an inch across north and central western counties.  **SEE maps for specific locations**  High temperatures will be in the 30’s and 40’s with overnight lows into the 20’s and 30’s.  Winds will be moderate from the north to northwest at 5-15 mph.  Water conditions will vary by time and location.  Generalized, Small Craft Advisories are possible through the weekend.  Areas to the south and offshore will have cautious conditions with 15-20 knot winds with gusts to 25 knots and seas 3-6 feet.    Areas inshore to the north will have 15 knot winds with gusts 20-25 knots with seas 3-5 feet, closer to 3 feet.  Conditions may improve later on Saturday and into Sunday, but Monday could bring back some cautious conditions.  Surf and beach conditions will be good for some, but conditions will be ok to cautious.  Besides rain and wintry precipitation at times, winds will be southwest to northwest at 10-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots with wave heights 2-4 feet max.  Water temperatures are steady in the 40’s and 50’s.  UV Index will be Low at 1-2/15.

A cold front will cross the area tonight and move to the south on Friday, with a series of low pressure waves moving along this front into Saturday.  High pressure will build in from the Midwest Saturday Afternoon and Sunday.  A warm front should then lift north late Sunday and Monday, followed by another area of high pressure from the Midwest for the middle of next week.

Next week will bring mixed precipitation to start the week before clearing out for Wednesday.  The second half of the week looks dry right now.  Highs will start off in the upper 40’s and low to mid 50’s again and drop into the 30’s by Tuesday for the rest of the week with lows into the teens and 20’s.  Water conditions will be cautious most of the beginning of the week, through midweek.  Conditions should improve towards the end of the week.  Surf and beach conditions look good to ok with the potential for winds to be gusty through midweek.

Good afternoon!  Cold with a mix of sun and clouds right now.  Clouds will decrease today becoming mostly sunny to sunny and mostly clear tonight.  There was a decent amount of precipitation yesterday, including a wintry mix across northwestern areas.  It looks to remain dry the rest of today, but rain, sleet and snow will move in tomorrow.  It looks like accumulation will be less than expected, at this point, with 1-2 inches across northwestern counties and less than an inch elsewhere.  However, even coastal areas will see some snow showers at least from this system.  Tomorrow into Monday Morning is going to be messy on the roads.  High temperatures will only get into the upper 30’s and low 40’s with overnight lows in the low to mid 20’s inland, mid to upper 20’s along the coast and teens across northern areas.  Winds are moderate from the northwest at 10-15 mph with 10-20 mph along the coast and southern areas.  Winds will become north tonight and diminish to around 10 mph inland and 15 mph for coastal areas.

Water conditions vary by location.  Northern inshore to midshore waters are rated good (BW), with some gusty winds and seas around 3 feet or so.  Southern inshore to midshore waters are cautious and all offshore waters are cautious.  ***HOWEVER, Small Craft Advisories are still in effect for ALL ocean waters from Sandy Hook east to Montauk and south to Cape May including Delaware Bay and parts of the Delaware River.  Here are some local forecasts for today.  Raritan Bay will have northwest wind 15-20 knots diminishing to 10-15 knots late today, then north at 5-10 knots after midnight with seas 1 foot or less.  Barnegat Bay will have north-northwest winds at 15 knots becoming 10-12 knots tonight with seas 2 feet subsiding to 1-2 feet tonight.  Delaware Bay will have northwest winds 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots becoming north tonight with seas 2-3 feet.  Northern inshore to midshore waters will have northwest around 15 knots with gusts to 20 knots possible becoming north 10-15 knots with gusts to 20 knots tonight with seas *3*-5 feet at 8 seconds becoming 2-4 feet at 8 seconds tonight.  South inshore to midshore waters will have northwest winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots becoming north tonight with seas 4-6 feet (buoys showing 6+ feet already) at 6 seconds becoming 3-5 feet at 9 seconds tonight.  Offshore waters will have north winds 15-25 knots becoming 10-20 knots tonight with seas 4-8 feet at 6-9 seconds.

Surf conditions are good for northern areas and ok for southern areas.  Gusty winds north to northwest at 10-20 knots are likely with gusts to 25 knots for southern areas.  Surf will be normal, a little rougher farther south with wave heights 1-3 feet for northern areas with a 2-3 foot south-southeast swell at 7 seconds and 1-3 feet to 2-4 feet with a 3-4 foot south-southeast swell at 6-7 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the mid 40’s.  UV Index is Low at 2/15.

Good afternoon!  Cloudy with snow across the southern half of the state and some snow showers starting in northern areas.  Today’s forecast was a BIG BUST.  Temperatures across the southern half of the state are 2-4 degrees colder than modeled and forecast for today, so what was supposed to be a wintry mix of mess with mainly rain for most, is now very heavy snow.  Snow is falling at 1-2 inches an hour across the center of the state from Philly to the coast.  I already have 2 inches here in western Toms River and it is still coming down with heavy bands of snow to keep moving in.  The NWS has issued a Winter Storm Warning for this area and Winter Weather Advisories for just about every other county.  Accumulation could be 3-6 inches for areas with snow falling already and 1-4 inches for other areas (see maps) of the state.  Some mixed precipitation overnight and freezing rain is still possible.  Temperatures are at or below freezing statewide and will remain this way for the remainder of today into tonight.  Temperatures look to rise above freezing in the early morning hours, switching any precipitation over into a mix and by morning, all rain.  This will make for a messy, hazardous morning commute!  Tomorrows highs will be in the 40’s and 50’s.

Snow is still falling across many parts of the state.  Anywhere from 1-12 inches have fallen across the state with possibly 1-3 more inches possible before everything changes over.  Snow will slowly change to a mix and then rain for Central and Southern Counties sometime around 8PM or 9PM.  Areas to the north and northwest, event Central Western NJ could continue to see a mix tonight becoming freezing rain.  Areas south of Northwestern NJ will see rain for Monday, while Northwestern NJ could see a wintry mix of mess including freezing rain during the day on Monday.  Most areas will warm into the 40's and 50's with 20's and 30's Monday Night.  Rain will then continue Monday Night for most areas with more wintry mix possible on Tuesday Day before rain clears out for the rest of the week.  Road conditions will be poor to hazardous at best in the morning, with at minimum lots of pooling water, and at worst ice and slush!

Water conditions look to be cautious to hazardous through Wednesday with gusty west winds moving in behind the cold front.  Surf and beach conditions look good to ok, minus the winds.
