23.3 pound Tog caught off Cape May
« on: December 16, 2013, 09:52:04 AM »
I found this on a NS charter boat out of Cape May fishing report page.  Here is the link to the full fishing report on catching this near record fish. This is the second one of this size caught on this boat in the last 6 years.

Re: 23.3 pound Tog quotes from captain
« Reply #6 on: December 16, 2013, 01:00:10 PM »
I found some quotes from the Captain on another site about this fish and blackfishing in general.

"Comments from Captain Adam - - It was a heck of an experience and just to see a fish that large is a once in a lifetime event. I've been blessed to see two of them on my boat that were that big. For those asking for the age of the fish...Dave's fish is heading to the taxidermist. The other 23.3lber that we caught on January 5, 2008 was given to the state's division of marine fisheries where the tog biologist, Peter Clark, dried it out, removed the otoliths(ear bones), and aged the fish. It was aged at 18 years old. This came as a surprise to him. If memory serves me correctly, he had aged an 11 or 12 pound fish from North Jersey that was aged to 23 years old! Five years older than our 23.3lber but HALF the size. His theory is that in the overall warmer waters of southern New Jersey, Delaware, and points south the fish grow that much more rapidly. Also, BOTH of these fish were males. He surmised that a male of that size is a super alpha male and dominates all the other fish on whatever structure he is on, monopolizing the food supply and eligible mates which makes him get even bigger."

"I would feel pretty fortunate to have gotten a 9lber with 30lb braid. I've seen some big fish on lighter braid but Lady Luck definitely played a part. A 10-15 plus pounder will own you with less than 50lb braid almost every time unless you're very lucky. I've seen 15s, 16s, a 19.5, and two over 23 and it's all you can do to hold them out of the structure with 50-65 let alone lighter stuff."

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.
