NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Weekend Edition: Dec 21-22

This upcoming weekend will have its good and bad points.  The good – it will be the unseasonably warm with temperatures in the 60’s being pumped in from the south.  The bad – moderate to high chances of rain are likely both Saturday and Sunday and water conditions will be cautious to hazardous most of the weekend (water conditions are very festive, highlighted in green and red ).  A system moving through the country which will bring severe weather across the south, snow and ice across the Midwest into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and into New England will bring moderate rains over the next 4 days or so, with the potential of several inches of rain.  With above average temperatures and snow melt, there is concern for river flooding.  River Forecasts will be issued starting tonight and tomorrow for potentially dangerous flooding conditions.  If you or someone you know lives around a river that normally floods, keep updated on this potential event.  Any updates will be posted in the Weekend Thread!  High Pressure off the coast of North Carolina will also bring warm air into the region starting tomorrow.  This warm-up will kept the rain from becoming a winter snowstorm.  High temperatures will range from the 50’s to upper 60’s with the warmer temperatures on Sunday.  Overnight lows will range from 40’s into mid 50’s with warmer overnight lows on Saturday Night.  Winds will be out of the south and low to moderate inland at 5-15 mph with higher winds along the coast at 10-15 mph with gusts to 20 mph.  Water conditions will begin to deteriorate by Saturday Afternoon and remain through the rests of the weekend with winds gusting to 30+ knots and seas to 10 feet offshore.  Cautious to hazardous conditions with Small Craft Advisories are likely by Saturday Afternoon.  Surf and beach conditions will be OK to cautious this weekend.  Saturday will start off ok for Saturday and deteriorate throughout the day becoming cautious on Sunday.  Water temperatures are a couple degrees cooler.  Bays and rivers range from just above freezing to upper 30’s.  Surf temperatures are in the low 40’s.  Inshore ocean waters are in the low to mid 40’s.  Offshore waters are in the mid 50’s.  UV Index will be Low at 0-2/15.

A high pressure system off of the coast of North Carolina will move farther offshore Thursday Night.  A cold frontal boundary will slowly approach the region from the Northwest on Friday.  This frontal boundary will stall just north of the area as several waves of low pressure travel northeast along it.  The frontal boundary will then move through the forecast area on Monday as the last low pressure system moves into the Canadian Maritimes.  Another Canadian High Pressure System will reach the Midwest on Tuesday and this area on Christmas Day.

Next week will start off with chances of rain on Monday and then dry for the rest of the week, so far.  Temperatures will start off above normal/warm and by Christmas return back to the 30’s and 40’s with overnight lows in the teens to 30’s.  Water conditions will clear up for Tuesday for the most part.  Surf and beach conditions look good to ok most of the week.

Good afternoon!  Just a quick update.  Sunny and warm across the southern half of the state with upper 50’s and 60’s right now.  Northern NJ is a little cooler in the upper 40’s and 50’s and has more of a mix of sun and clouds.  Sun will continue with clouds increasing today becoming mostly cloudy to cloudy.  Northern/northwestern areas have a chance of rain during the day and chances increase for the rest of the state tonight into Sunday.  Chance of fog tonight across most of the state, so be aware of this.  Highs will be in the upper 50’s to mid 60’s with low to mid 50’s across northern areas.  Overnight lows will be mild with low to mid 50’s and mid 40’s for northern areas.  Winds from the southeast are moderate at 10-15 mph.

Water conditions are cautious with Small Craft Advisories from Sandy Hook east to Montauk and south to Delaware.  Rivers and bays will have southwest winds 10-15 knots.  Inshore waters will have southwest winds 15-20 knots with gusts to 25 knots increasing to 30 knots tonight and seas 4-7 feet at 7 seconds building to 5-8 feet at 8 seconds tonight.  Midshore to Offshore waters will have southwest winds 15-25 knots increasing to 20-30 knots tonight with seas 4-8 feet building to 5-9 feet at 8 seconds tonight.  Fog is likely across all marine waters limiting visibility to less than 1 nm.

Surf and beach conditions are ok to cautious.  Southwest winds are 10-15 knots increasing to 15-25 knots tonight.  Surf is rough today with wave heights 2-4 feet increasing to 2-5 feet tonight and then 3-6 feet by early tomorrow with a 3-5 foot south swell at 6 seconds.  Surf temperatures are in the low 40’s.  UV Index is Low at 2/15.

Good afternoon!  Mostly cloudy to cloudy with the sun mixed in at times.  Foggy in some areas, especially along the coast and coastal waters.  There is a chance of showers today with rain moving in tonight.  Thunderstorms are possible, especially for southeastern parts of the state.  Rain will be heavy with over an inch of rain possible.  Add any snow melt into this equation and river flooding is possible.  Right now, the Millstone River at Blackwells Mills will near flood stage and the North Branch of the Rancocas Creek at Pemberton will also near flood stage.  Temperatures are mild today with almost the entire state in the 60’s.  Highs will make it into 60’s to low 70’s today with high humidity.  Lows will only get into the 50’s again.  These warm temperatures will only stick around through early tomorrow, when a cold front moves in and temperatures begin to drop.  Winds could be moderate at times today from the south to southwest at 15-20 mph.

Water conditions are cautious to hazardous today with Small Craft Advisories due to winds to 25 knots and seas to 9 feet, Dense Fog Advisories limiting visibility to less than 1 nm and Gale Warnings offshore for winds to 30 knots and seas to 10 feet.
Surf and beach conditions are ok to cautious.  South to southwest winds will be 15-25 knots with possible higher gusts.  Surf is rough with wave heights 2-5 feet and some 3-6 feet with a 4-6 foot south swell at 6-7 seconds.  Be careful out there fishing!  Surf temperatures are in the mid 40’s.  UV Index is Low at 0-1/15.
