Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament Moved To May.
« on: January 14, 2014, 12:04:37 PM »
For you surf guys n gals. Just received this in an email from DEP.

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has announced that this year's Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament will be moving from October to May. In 2014 the tournament will be held on Sunday, May 18, at Island Beach State Park.

While the tournament date has changed, it still offers an excellent opportunity to enjoy a fun day of fishing with family and friends. Funds raised are used to provide the disabled and elderly beach access, surf fishing instruction programs and equipment, marine education and restoration efforts, and surf fishing access.

The individual who catches the overall largest fish wins the "Governor's Award" and has his/her name engraved on the Governor's Cup which is permanently displayed at the park. Fishing equipment is awarded to winners who catch the largest fish in a variety of species and age group categories.

For more information on the tournament, including "Early Incentive Registration" which saves participants money and time entering the park on tournament day, visit http://www.njfishandwildlife.com/news/2014/gsft14.htm on the Division's website.

I think it's a good move.  Hopefully they'll be some big bass around to catch.  The last one was a bust.

Starts in April, gets better in May and breaks open end of may beginning of June.

If the bass aren't in the area, there's nothing.  No blackfish or kingfish, which usually put people on the board on October.  And still to early for fluke.
And being in May it will be way to crowded.  The October weather usually keeps the fair weather crowds away.
If the bass and blues are around in great numbers that day, the judging format they use could get crazy.

I am waiting for crazy Chris.  The blues should be showing up.  Any time after Mothers day or close to it.  We'll see what happens.  I know the large crowds just have not been there the past few years.  Its good to try a new date.

Happy Catching
