A very unsettled week with precipitation, a return of Arctic Air and cautious to hazardous water conditions.  The week will start off dry on Monday with sunny skies and clouds building throughout the day with cold air moving in Monday Night.  It’s a return of the “polar vortex,” we have all heard too much about this winter.  Precipitation will move in on Tuesday with possible snow accumulations.  Areas south and east of the I-95 corridor look to have the highest chances of 1-3/2-4 inches of snow, with areas north and west of I-95 having less chances, but could still see some snow showers.  Wednesday looks to be clear again before precipitation returns on Thursday for parts of the state.  Snow showers are possible with accumulations on Thursday before clearing out again for Friday.  High temperatures will range from the 40’s on Monday down to the teens by mid week.  Lows will be in the 30’s on Monday down to single digits by midweek.  Wind chills could drop temperatures by an additional 10-20 degrees.  Winds will be gusty most of the week, with Monday and Wednesday the windiest.  Water conditions will vary by day, time and location, but look to be cautious to hazardous most of the week.  Monday and Wednesday Night are the only times where conditions look to be below SCA criteria.  Winds could gust to gale force this week with seas 3-5 feet inshore and 4-8 feet offshore.  Surf and beach conditions will echo the water conditions with good to ok to cautious conditions due to gusting winds and rough, elevated surf.  Water temperatures are steady in the upper 30’s for bays and rivers, low to mid 40’s for inshore ocean waters, upper 30’s to low 40’s for surf and upper 40’s to low 50’s offshore.  UV Index will be Low varying from 0-2/15 this week.

I will update snowfall forecasts closer to the event.  Below is NWS PHI Briefing #1.

NWS PHI Briefing #1

A weakening trough will move offshore Sunday Night.  A stronger area of low pressure will move eastward across Southern Canada Sunday Night into Monday, dragging a frontal boundary through the East Coast on Monday.  An area of low pressure is expected to form along this frontal boundary on Monday and pass to the east on Tuesday.  Arctic High Pressure will then build to the south Tuesday into Wednesday.  Another clipper type low pressure system and its associated cold front will move through the Mid-Atlantic States Wednesday Night into Thursday.  Another Arctic High Pressure system will reach the Tennessee Valley on Friday and move east and offshore on Saturday.  Another cold front from Central Canada will move across the forecast area later Saturday or Sunday.

The weekend looks to be clear and dry with temperatures moderating back some into the 20’s to 30’s during the day and teens to 20’s overnight.  Water conditions look to be cautious to hazardous this weekend with surf and beach conditions cautious.

Have a great week!
