Sat Phone recommendations??
« on: March 08, 2014, 03:20:19 PM »
Trying to determine what Sat phone would be best for purchase. Planning to use for some mid range trips offshore. No fancy bells and whistles needed, just reliability in emergency situations. Hope to never need to use but planning for safety. Appreciate any info on these.   :headscra:

Thanks!

Iridium or Global Star appear to be most recommended. The issue I am seeing is the plan required for use. If I was going to use this day in and out, I get it, but packages start w 75 mins for @ $160 but they expire in 30 days, use or lose. The other package is $465@ for the contract year and then pay @ $6.00/minute for calls made. Can seem to find an "emergency use ony" plan. Also, starting to look at EPIRBs, found one under the RESCUE ME plan for a reasonable amount.

Wow. I have two PLB's. One mounted at the wheel and one on my ditch bag that will be on my belt for my mid shore trips.

Have a contact at a marina checking into options for me at the moment. Hoping to hear some good opportunity on either phone or EPirb.

I know Fred is using a PLB by ACR, anyone else using these? SPOT brand? Others?
