Which reel for the Plasma?
« on: April 07, 2014, 06:29:44 PM »
OK, so a lot of you know Katie won the Plasma rod at the banquet and now she needs a reel for it.  We won't be purchasing one for a while, but I'm hoping to have it ready by October so I can borrow it from her for the Gambler trip. ;D

The rod is a 6'0" rated for 40-100 line.  I would like to get a reel that would hold enough 80 lb mono for a party boat tuna trip, yet be as small as possible.

In terms of size, would I need a 50 or would a 30 work?  Could I get enough 80 lb mono on a 30 if I back it with some 100 lb Power Pro first?

Maybe a more important question is how many yards of mono is sufficient? :headscra:

By the way, for comparison, a Canyon EX-50 holds 950 yards of 50 lb mono, while a Canyon EX-30 holds 970 yards of 30 lb mono.

Hoping some of you offshore guys can steer me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Bob

Tell her to save her money and for now use the one off of her Barbie rod.  ovrbt

She has some time till the bigger boys come around.

I would go with the 30,,  Ask Don.. But I also think the 50 is too heavy for Katie ;D

I got this advice from a couple of our pro captains for my Avet PRO EXW 30/2 2 speed.  400 yards of 80lb Hollow core braid right to the spool, Just put a wrap of electrical tape on spool first. "no mono backing needed"  then add a top shot of 150 to 200 yards 60 lb mamoi diamond mono, break strength is 80lb. You can do the hollow core to mono splice with the needle that chuck of tournament cable showed us at the seminar. " Chinese finger style, so on a no braid party boat you most likely will never get passed the 150/200 yards of mono to reveal the braid. Jerry Brown and Mamoi make nice Hollow core. t^

Thanks.  That encouraging.  I would like to go with a 30 if I can.  (Especially for Katie's sake.) ;D

I don't know about using hollow core since some of that stuff costs almost as much as a new reel.  thud

But I can tie a pretty decent knot to join the mono to solid braid. t^

Bob, I'm a little fuzzy on this, but I believe my penn 30vsw got 490 yards of momoi 50lb. The momoi breaks a lot higher than actual rating, but I'm sure you know that already.

And if need be Bob, your more than welcome to borrow my 30vsw for the trip,,, you can just give it a good cleaning/lube when your done with it. My momoi line was new last summer.
