Outboard engine opinions needed

I put the boat in a slip this year and every time we go to the boat, the wife is eying up the neighbors boat. So we started boat shopping  .
We have been out on test rides and I know what kind of HP I want and it's going to be a 4 stroke.

Anyone like a certain brand over another and why?

My Johnson outboard hasn't given me any trouble for over 12 years now.

I think the big thing is finding a service center near you that you can trust to do repairs. Around here we have Chamblis who if you have a vein rude you are in good hands, yamaha has a really big network of guys who work on them, Zukes and Hondas smaller although there is a couple good guys to see. By local and service local, they all are pretty good today. ( just not a merc fan myself)

Yup.  It hasn't given me any trouble in 12 years, because it hasn't run in 12 years.

I service and repair them all but on my Maritime, it has a Honda on it. I was always a JohnnyRude  person and still am for small motors. I just love lightweight 2 stroke simple motors. It was a hard sell for me for the Honda but the dealer said I'd be real happy. He was right. So far I can't complain.

Never heard a bad thing about Hondas but the price.  Can't say that about Yamaha who recently started turning they're backs to customers with corrosion issues.
    My dad has only good things to say about his Evinrude E-tec. It will be 3 years old in November with no problems and gets used all year long in N.Carolina 4 to 5 days a week. They barely use oil too.

If you look at what the  Government agencies use it's all Hondas. But they are all Quiet that's for sure I know seems like every other boat you see has Yammies on it....I just talked to a guy who just went from a E Tech to a Yamaha, he said he liked the Yamaha better! Reseach Research , like anything else your going to hear good and bad.  Good luck in the search Rick!

Last year ,I was boarded by the Coast Guard ,got to talking with the captain of the inspection craft .He told me that once these Honda's are done (Like the one on his craft ) the CG is switching over to the new E-TECH'S .Just a thought .

hard to believe the gubmint moving from 4str to 2str.

I think he was telling you what he wanted to do.
truth be told I'd venture even the federales have a hard time killin the Hondas.

Rick if you buy a new 4str from anyone and do the regular maintenance religiously you will be fine with anything these days.
