Reel Maintenance
« on: October 08, 2014, 02:57:58 PM »
Does anyone here clean and lube their reels? I have just begun to do this to my reels (had a good friend do them previously, thanks Bob) and feel that there are probably others here who would like learn how to do theirs also. If so, perhaps we can set up a session for whoever wants to learn how to take apart, clean, lube and reassemble a reel.

I am just starting to do this so, being the amateur I am, I could not lead this instruction. Is there anyone with experience in this willing to take this on? I think it would be very beneficial to many and it would be a night out of the house.

If there is interest in this, both someone (or two, or three) who could instruct and people interested in learning how to, let it be know and we can try to arrange a meeting place for this. I can bring some of my reels to use for this.  ;D But you can/should bring their own.

I don't expect or intend this to make an expert reel repair person out of anyone, just a means to get fundamental tear down, clean and lube knowledge.

Anyone?

Great topic Joe. I myself have always took care of my OLD Penn conventionals, but never got into any of the two speed stuff and try to stay away from the Drag side of the reel if it looks to complicated on the parts schematic. Even on the Penns i keep the lighted magnifying glass near by the little parts and old eyes can make it tough with out one t^

I'd definitely be interested.
I do most of my own service and repairs, so advise from a more knowledgeable individual would be great.

That is a great idea, I have been doing my own maintenance on my reals with little or no knowledge for years. My big problem has been finding parts for the old out dated reals. I would be interested in any information/instruction.  t^

I am certainly not! However, if we need space we could certainly use my training center in Bensalem on a weekend. I know it's not the closest for most people but, the offer is there.

I can also offer a more centrally located place for the demo but like fillenger said I'm not qualified to run the demo. I'm sure there are guys here that can though. If anyone needs gun cleaning and maintenance instruction..then I'm you man.

I am located in Farmingdale, NJ Monmouth County.

I have a very simple  and efficient way to clean my reels..

The first step is to remove the reel from the rod then wipe the reel seat off very well, take the reel and pack it in a box with padding and ship to Bob

Repairing reels is not hard. I have been fixing Newell's & older Penn Reels for a long time now. Since I have taken this past season off from working on the MJ IV in SHB. I have had time to do this. I enjoy talking to myself.
