After the trip....
« on: October 13, 2014, 01:36:52 PM »
This being my 1st conventional reel owned, what do you guys do after the trip to keep them in shape?  I rinsed it with the hose and wiped it down with a clean rag.  It still showed a lot of salt, so I wiped it down again with a clean wet rag and still shows some salt.  Trying to keep this in tip-top shape. Should I de-spool the line and rinse it again?

I... rinse mine down on my rod holder on the front of my truck for about 5 minutes.. then.. being cool out.. I hit them with the leaf blower.. then inspect and wipe a little of the reel..

Thanks Rod.  I usually rinse with some salt-away but apparently, I left that bottle in FL. lol. Don't feel like spending $25 on a new bottle

Am I the only one who rinse my rod in the shower during Tog season?

I know this will bring a few comments.  pcrn

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who also uses the shower for that purpose. Doesn't make the wife too happy but I could do worse... chrz

When it's cold out I'll do that sometimes too. t^

Best way to get the salt off the rods and reels is to use the mist setting on your hose nozzle.  This will get the salt off the surface without forcing salt and/or sand into the reel.

If they were on the gunwale during the trip and got constantly sprayed and splashed with saltwater, it's a good idea to take off one of the side plates and even remove the spools to make sure the guts are thoroughly dried before storing the reels.

Washing your rod in the shower is fine. Do it in a really fast motion and don't get caught.

Seriously,  I was told to rinse off with the drag locked down tight and always loosen the drag while drying and reel is not in use.

Rick I don't understand, why is it only during tog season that you shower with Rod. I'm sure the both of you would of loved a nice hot shower after the tuna trip  ;D

I'll admit to occasionally  showering with my tackle in cold weather.. and sometimes in cheap motel rooms.. but we're just friends.. but when they are going to be stored a while, my routine is to  lock down the drags, and give them a spritz with the hose.. then i give both reel and rod a good going over with warm, soapy (dawn)water.. using a plastic scrub brush.. not going to get off dried scales and goo with just cold spray..  I make sure to get the guides good as salty water will tend to collect there.. then I rinse, and let them dry in the sun.. before i store them I loosen the drags and give a final wipe with a lightly lubed rag.. then I smoke a cigarette and fall asleep..  chrz
