color of kayaks
« on: March 12, 2015, 09:29:44 PM »
Does anyone here know for fact that certain color kayaks attract more bugs then others. i have read that Blue & red are the worst color for bugs.
I own a sand dune color one , never had a bug issue but i want to purchase another one at paddlesport, i like the yellow for HIGH VISIBILITY  clp clp, so the boats will see me  hhppy. but i also like the red but i hear they attract bugs.

So i am willing to hear facts since this is a fishing club who would now better then the people who spend it on the water.

Be safe out there

The more visible to boaters the better.  Not sure about the insect question.

I have a red yak, but never been bothered by bugs. I don't fresh water fish in it, so can't really tell you if it's the color. Another thing too, I use a lot of live bait and keep that in a water tight container. I would think bait smell would play a bigger part on attracting the bugs.

I have a yellow native manta ray12, before this I had an ok caper and a scrambler that were also yellow. No bugs and high visibility . When you look at kayaks at the show look at what jumps out at you (color) I choose yellow. I was at the show once , Native likes to show their kayaks in the green camo or green. See i'm yellow  slt.

Thanks rod,

Floats up thank you too, the funny thing is my Hobie outback weighs 82 lbs.

my wilderness ride 115 82 lbs

so they are the same just easier to get around in the water.

Yes i am looking at getting a small trailer, like harbor freight has so if the kids want to go i can put the 3 kayaks on the trailer.

spending time with my family is everything...

The only color I have ever heard attracts bugs is black. But they don't make black kayaks so don't worry about it. You seem to be shopping for a Hobie from the colors you are listing. In the hobie colors the blue is most visible with red second. The yellow color is visible but shows every little bit of dirt that you get on it and will be harder to see in whitecaps then blue and red. White kayaks almost disappear in whitecaps. As far as sales I sell a tractor trailer load of Hobies every year and sand is most popular with red and blue tied for second. Hardcore grizzly types like olive best. Olive is also my personal favorite.

When I bought my Hobie Quest as few years back at Paddlesport, Hobie reps were pushing the fact that color and bugs did matter.  I'm not sure but I have not had any problems with the sand color I have.  As far as color. it does not matter especially of the motor vessel is drunk.  I fly my day glow orange flag and hope and pray...

Happy Catching
