Drag Scale
« on: March 18, 2015, 07:59:14 PM »
I normally use a common spring scale but the last couple I've had the top of the piston break through the cap when I test my gear to the higher poundage.  I've been looking at this style since it's supposed to be a 1 person device but I have no clue how it works? Anyone ever use this type?

Haven't used one but it looks like it measures in kilograms. I would check to make sure you can change it to pounds before buying one, unless you are good at converting kg to lb. Also seems kinda pricy.

I did find this if it help.

I need a new one for setting drags. Any suggestions? For pounds, just divide by 2.2

Where does the line hook? Do you have a link?

Too expensive and only goes to line weight of 32#  not good enough for me.

Been using a cheap spring scale like this for a few years now.  Works for me.  Is this the type that you were breaking?

Fred, I put this in my first post. Here it is again. I think it shows how it hooks up.

Regular plain old school spring scale is all thats really needed, unless you are trying to test your gears upper limits and max your performance, which can be risky with break offs as now you have to test knot strengths and they do vary greatly.

I set my drags to 1/3 of breaking strength and good to go, or 15lbs at strike for pelagic's.
