Where do you purchase tackle?
« on: November 15, 2007, 09:46:57 PM »
Hello All!
Towards the end of my season I tend to research and purchase new tackle for next season. I do all my research in forums and on line stores, magazines, etc..
Please let me know where you go for the best deals on lures and tackle,
                Eddie

A lot of guys use Shark River Mail Order.  It is Mac's Bait and Tackle in Neptune, NJ mail order catalog.

believe it or not, wal-mart and k-mart reduce the prices to clearance aroung this time of year on all fishing tackle, and there are some good deals.

Hi Hunter,

I have to agree Wal-Mart and their prices cant be beat, but when you go the a B&T you gain more than just a purchase of an item.  You gain a place that will share information that Wal-Mart can't begin to.

There are two I go to regularly, Grumpy's and Betty & Nicks.

Happy Catching

Paul

I buy bulk items hooks, snap swivels, beads, spinner blades, three way and tie my own rigs....something to do while watching F-Ball....go on ebay to Big Fish Sports online store... TT^

If you want some good prices, there are a number of fishing flea markets coming up and several vendors with rigs for good prices TT^

Har-Lee Rod in Jersey City and True World Marine in Bayonne are the 2 stores I usually frequent.

I'll also buy tackle off of Ebay if I can get a good deal (less than what I might pay in a store--that's including shipping)---have gotten some real bargins in the past) & if I know exactly what I want.

I've purchased items from both Tackle Direct & Shark River.

I also buy a lot bulk items (hooks, swivels, teasers, line, etc. ) at the various outdoor shows/expos over the winter. I've been fortunate enough to have developed a nice relationship with some vendors who guve me very good deals. Never really go to the flea market type shows, although I did attend a Hi-Mar flea market once and found good deals.

I usually make at least 1 trek out to Cabelas in Hamburg Pa. on a winter Saturday or Sunday--go way to kill a day.

Some of the other  B&T shops I like are the OutDoorsman in Fairview, NJ  t^. Dan the owner ties some very nice rigs (flounder, sea bass, blackfish etc.) using Gamakatsu hooks--again buy in bulk for better deal. Reel Life in Pt. Pleasant has loads of stuff  t^. If I'm in south NJ then Fisherman's Headquarters  t^ is a place I'll stop into. Lastly, there is a shop in Queens, NY called Peace Token that I've heard amazing things about. Wall to wall ($ even ceiling) filled to the brim with goodies.

Can you tell I'm a tackle ho..... ;D

Reel Life pretty much has everything I could need/want/drool over.  Great place, and usually willing to talk to you and help.  Brielle B&T is closer to me, but it's usually a zoo being so close to the party boats.  L&H Woods and Water on Rt. 35 in Wall is very nice, and they're pretty knowledgeable.

Anyone know about Kevin Bogan's in Pt. Pleasant?  That would be a little closer to me than Reel Life.

Hi All,

Kevin makes some of the best rods in the world. Little or no tackle in there. His cousin Greg, Brielle Bait and Tackle is a real nice guy. I forget Greg's brother's name. Kudos to him as well!

I buy from local Bait and Tackle shops. There is no substitute. You may not get the absolute lowest prices, but you will get loyalty. Over the years, I have received numerous deals, well below cost, from these fine folks.

I frequent the following (each has a specialty for me):

1. Pell's (Thanks Pete and the Gang)
2. Reel Life (Thanks Ritchie)
3. Reel Seat (Thanks Dave)
4. Brielle Bait and Tackle (Thanks Greg)
5. Fisherman's Supply (Thanks Ron)
6. Betty and Nick's (Thanks John)
7. Grumpy's (Thanks Grumpy)
8. Murphy's Hook House (Thanks Dennis)
9. Fisherman's Headquarters (Thanks Staff)

I frequent Fisherman's Flea Markets but end up buying from these guys at those shows anyway.

Good Luck,

Ed

PS - I hope I didn't miss anyone ...

Good shop to order custom rods (I have 2 of his rods), not much in the way of tackle.

Cabella's is opening a super store at the meadowlands.
My dad is an old salty who retired in North Carolina. He has a nice house with a 150' bulkhead in the yard with a Parker fishing boat on an electric lift and a sailboat.  His local tackle  stores owner  cannot even buy tackle for as low as Wal-Mart sells them for. Walmart buys enough in bulk to supply every store they have. Thats a boatload of tackle!
My dad tells me some very interesting stories about fishing with his dad, my grandfather, who I never met.
He was from Norway and was the captain of a commercial fishing boat which he owned with his brothers out of Brooklyn. They would go down south for 2 or 3 weeks at a time. I heard stories of German U-boats off the coast opening there deck guns on commercial fishing boats. Cutting the helpless men in the wheelhouse in half with their machine guns. Another story was the distress calls from the cruise ship Lusitania, and Andrea Doria.
Stories of schools hammerhead sharks following them as they threw the junkfish overboard and many whales in the distance.
My great uncle out of New Bedford, Mass had worked a full year having a new commercial fishing boat built during WW2 and the Navy commendeared it to use as a spy ship. He could not do anything about it! 5hrug
I'll stop rambling on now.. Lets go fishing tommorrow morning! TT^
