Fishing Fort Lauderdale with Topshotfishing and Capt. Zsak

Tim and Kathy Smith from Pennsylvania chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale.  We had winds out of the east at 7-12 mph with seas running 2-4 ft., temperatures in the mid 80’s.

As Tim and Kathy boarded the boat, we discussed the different types of fishing we could do.  Kathy expressed her desire to catch a Sailfish so with that in mind, we stopped
in the Fort Lauderdale inlet to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait.  My plan was to do some kite fishing later on in the trip.

Fifteen minutes from the dock lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale.  We started off trolling with two plainers down and four surface baits. After missing a couple of fish on the plainer rods, I could see a rip forming north of Fort Lauderdale in 164 ft. of water – a good avenue for the predators to travel in.  We put up two kites, both with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite and one live Goggle Eye from the outrigger.  The trap was set!!!

Our first fish was a Black Tip Shark, as Tim reeled it in.  Pictures were taken and the Shark was released.  We reset and as Kathy was sitting in the cockpit yelling, “here fishy, fishy” the black shadow appeared on the right short kite bait.  The Sailfish immediately grabbed the bait, exited the water and threw the hook.  “Don’t stop calling the Sailfish, Kathy”, I said, “another one will appear soon”.  Left long – dorsal and bill out of the water – as the Sailfish chased the live Goggle Eye!!!!  Hooked Up!!!!  The Sailfish exited the water, tail-walking towards the boat putting on a fantastic show. Kathy jumped into the fighting chair to do battle.  Twenty minutes later she was rewarded with her Sailfish as our mate, Dave, wired the Sailfish to the side of the boat for picture taking and released to fight again.

With the anglers happy with their catches, it was time to head back.  The anglers retired into the a/c salon to relax on the ride back to the dock at Bahia Mar, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
