Florida Party Boat List
« on: November 27, 2007, 10:31:32 PM »
With winter fast approaching, some of us might be thinking of taking a trip to Florida.

If there is any interest, I can compile a pretty complete list of party boats that are located throughout Florida including phone #s and websites.

Just let me know here & I'll get to work on it.

great list! did you know that in Florida they call party boats "drift boats"? up here, the captain starts a drift, and after a while, if catching, he starts the same drift again, but points the boat in the opposite direction, giving the anglers on the other side of the boat the opportunity to not be under the boat. in Florida, they drift one way thw whole time. when you board, they  ask you, "bottom fishing, or topwater"? if you choose bottom, you're given about 12 ounces of lead and a single large hook. if you choose  topwater, you're given about 1 ounce of lead, and a three-hook set-up where the three hoohs are connected directly to one another. at first you wonder why you need such a set-up, but soon, you know! evry single fish you catch is soon sheared cleanly in half (right behind the last hook) by the ever-present barracudas! meanwhile, the bottom fishing side of the boat is pulling in loads of fish, all looking like they were in "FINDING NEMO". VERY CUTE, VERY SMALL, VERY WORTHLESS! 5hrug bngh hhppy

Great list thank You,

Wow, I see the Miss Pass-A-Grill is still around.  I can remember spending my summers down there with my grandparents and going fishing on her.  That was in the mid 50's.

Pretty cool

I've fished a few of these boats when I lived in Florida in the early 80's (the Reward fleet, The Blue Seas, The Blue Heron) and a few in the keys that are not listed (one out of Whale Harbour in Islamorada). Anyway depending on the targeted species most of these boats drift fish (similar to our fluke fishing) the one big difference is that the will only fill one side of the boat (the other side being completely empty).

There used (maybe they're still there) to be a fleet of party boats in North Miami Beach that sailed out of Haulover Marina beside their normal daytime schedule of both 1/2 and 3/4 day trips-there were some boats that offered 3/4 night and 1/2 night (actually they offered to 1/2 night first trip leaving around 7 PM returning at midnight then heading out again at 1 AM returning at 6 AM...I used to fish all night sometimes).

Just read about a party boat out of Port Everglades (Ft. Lauderdale) that offers night time (6 PM-2 AM) swordfishing trips.  The fare is only $100 (an extra $15 to rent a heavy duty rod/reel) and they limit it to 15 people. Squid and blue runners are provided  for bait but you are also free to bring your own (rigged mackerel is a prime sword bait here) The boat cruises at 20 Kts. What is also pretty cool is that any and all swordfish caught gets evenly divided among the 15 fares regardless of who caught it. I believe the name of the boat is Catch My Drift

I remember party boat fishing in Florida as a kid when we would go to my parents vacation condo and I remember it always being real crappy on those boats.

The daytime bottom/reef trips were hit or miss. Either the boat did well with snappers/groupers or it would be grunts all day. This was especially true of the boats in Ft. Lauderdale & Miami. Night was the time to be for snappers. Now if were drift fishing for kingfish, false albacore and mahi (they are called bonito in Florida) then during the day was prime.

I recall one time I went out on New Years Eve (1981 or '82) from South Miami. We were watch the fireworks from the Orange Bowl parade/festivites and bailing the fish. Using a top/bottom rig we were getting #2-4 bluefish (yea I know you could catch them here) on the top hook and nice mutton & mangrove snappers on the bottom hook. I must have went home with 50+ fish that trip.

Nice,

I recall going out and bringing back a mess of grouper, I guess that is why even today I think it has to be one of my favorites.  Blackened grouper sandwiches Emmmmmm.

Happy Catching
