NJ Fishing & Boating Weather Outlook Memorial Day Weekend 2016

Unsettled weather for the weekend with hot and humid temperatures and some borderline to cautious water conditions. With the heat and humidity forecast for the weekend, Saturday and Sunday will have chances of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Thunderstorms do not look severe right now, but will be capable of heavy rains, dangerous lightning, and gusty winds. Keep this in mind while outside during weekend activities. These storms could move in or pop up quickly. However, sun will be more prevalent than clouds. Monday will have more organized or widely scattered rain and showers with more clouds. Highs for the weekend will be in the upper 80’s and low 90’s inland with upper 70’s and low 80’s at the shore. Overnight lows will only be in the 60’s with moderate to higher humidity. Monday will see a slight break in temperatures with 70’s and overnight lows still in the 60’s. Water conditions will be very mixed and forecasts range from good to cautious conditions. Overall, water conditions will be more in the borderline to cautious than all good or all cautious. Winds could gust to 20 knots at times and seas could push 4 feet on the oceans. Surf and beach conditions will be good with just some gusty winds, surf heights 1-3 feet, and overall a Low Risk of rip currents. Later Monday could see some increased winds and seas with an increase in surf heights to 2-4 feet. Remember, thunderstorms are possible on Saturday and Sunday. Getting stuck on the beach in a thunderstorm can be dangerous, so be alert to changing conditions. Water temperatures have increased a few degrees with most areas in the 60’s and some shallower waters into the 70’s. UV Index will be Very High on Saturday and Sunday 9-10/15 and Moderate to High on Monday at 3-6/15. Use sunblock and try staying out of the sun on the Very High UV Index days. We have not had any Very High days yet this season! Air Quality could also be poor this weekend, which can cause problems for young, elderly, sick, and those with underlying breathing diseases.

High pressure off the middle Atlantic coast will settle over our region through the weekend, gradually giving way to a cold front, that is expected to move through our area Tuesday. Canadian high pressure is expected to settle over our region by mid week, while a persistent area of low pressure lurks off the southeast coast.

Next week is looking dry from Tuesday on with continued highs in the 70’s and 80’s with overnight lows in the 50’s and 60’s. Water, surf and beach conditions look good after Tuesday.

Tropical Season does not start until next week, but there is already a system off the Southeast Coast being watched for development, which is at 90% right now!

Many areas have already received rain and thunderstorms. Western parts of the state received most of the rain last night, while Eastern and Coastal Areas received rain this afternoon. Rain and thunderstorms will continue for Eastern parts of the state and scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible for other areas. Rain can be heavy at time with dangerous lightning and some gusty winds.
