Standard Horizon GX2200 VHF/AIS Receiver/Loud Hailer
« on: May 31, 2016, 06:11:28 PM »
I was in the market for a loud hailer and came across the SH GX2200 by accident. I liked the fact that it came with a hailer and VHF (DSC) with integrated GPS. The icing on the cake was the AIS receiver which I felt would be very beneficial for low-visibility operations and for fishing intel gathering.

The unit was easy to install and as easy to interface with my Garmin 7610vsx plotter via a pair of NMEA wires. The radio can be used as an AIS receiver without connecting it to a plotter. It has an adjustable distance ring which shows all contacts transmitting AIS data. You can get a list of the targets within range (many are ship named and others are MMSI numbers only). When you select a target you get a host of information including COG, distance, heading and the option to make a DSC call to them as well as others.

The big deal is using it on my plotter. The info is awesome! I can set "danger" alarms when an AIS target is within a defined range, view their current location, tracks, MARPA info (gotta read up on that) and the other information that can be displayed on the VHF screen as well. If I am correct (need to read) I am also notified on-screen now if any AIS or DSC equipped radio makes a DSC emergency call.

I used the unit today in the fog along with my radar and it was awesome! It was nice to have another piece of safety equipment that adds real time situational awareness.

I used the hailer today in the fog and it operated great as well. It has preprogrammed fog horns and a "listen" function turning the hailer speaker into a amplified intercom. There is also a speaker in the mic.

Great product so far!

I think you can find them for about $320 and there was a $40 rebate. Not sure if it is still available.

I knew it was AIS. My computer thought it was automated internal defibrillator (AID).....
